| Dear Editor,
I refer to Mr Abu Bakr's letter captioned "Homosex-uality
is a threat
to human survival" (31/05/2003). Mr. Bakr put forward his argument
that homosexuality is criminal because of the fact that it is a threat
to human survival (that is, it threatens the propagation of the
species). What Mr Bakr fails to realise is that heterosexuality is
also a threat to human survival. The world population has been
multiplying at such a fast rate that if this trend is not curbed we will
soon have no food to feed everyone, no space to live, no fuel to
survive. Just take a look at the developing countries, a lot of the
problems in these areas are due to overpopulation. In light of this
should we also outlaw heterosexuality?
Another fact is (as any biologist will tell you) that in the
natural
eco-system there are checks to keep species population in control. Who
knows maybe homosexuality is part of a natural process to keep our
population in check? No one really knows.
My point is that neither Mr. Bakr nor anyone else knows it all.
Even
the greatest scientists are baffled with nature and how it works.
If someone is homosexual, it does not at all interfere with anyone
else's rights! The law is created to protect our rights. Thus, murder,
rape, theft, discrimination are criminal or unlawful. So how does
being homosexual become criminal, since it does not violate anyone
else's right?
Yours faithfully,
Phillip DaSilva
