| In his letter of May 29th, Lawrence
Hallahan sought to show that homosexuals are not deserving of protection
from discrimination under the law. His first suggestion that
homosexuality is learned behaviour is beside the point. While the
homosexual orientation is inborn (God given, you might say), the
homosexual act is indeed a choice. But what of it? Does that make it less valid? Accepting Jesus is a choice too and Christians are regarded as a bona fide group in society. In his second line of reasoning, Mr Hallahan dismisses pro-homosexual views as intolerant. But they are not. We are not seeking to force our way into your private life and we have never tried to `exclude' the religious community from anything. Rather, we seek protection from acts that hurt us - hurt us solely because we are gay. And we are not talking about violence. This is about employment, access to benefits and freedom from harassment. In your private homes, clubs and churches you will still be free to associate with whom you wish. No government has the right to take that from you. Every government, however, has a duty to ensure equal access to opportunities and privileges by all its citizens in the public sphere. Lastly, Mr Hallahan shamefully accuses us of seeking special treatment. Mr Hallahan, I suppose that the others mentioned in this Fundamental Rights Bill are seeking undeserved special treatment also? The disabled? The Afro-Guyanese? The Amerindians? The Muslims? You are trying to scare people with an untruth. This is, and always has been, about equal treatment. We do not want special treatment as homosexuals. We simply want to be given the same rights as everyone else: We do not want to crash your party; we want to know that we can have ours in peace. We do not want your money; we just want to know that we can hold on to ours. We are not trying to force you to change your behaviour; we are simply trying to live our own life. Yours faithfully, |
