Grades 2 – 5

Several Class Periods

 

Part 1 – Prewriting with Authoring Software

 

Objective 1 – 3.2 A1 - To generate possible ideas for writing through recalling experiences

Objective 2 – 3.2 A3 - To use a graphic organizer and a prewriting strategy to generate thoughts about the summer sensory experiences

Objective 3 – 8.1A - To organize thoughts and practice entering information into an Excel Spreadsheet

Objective 4 – 8.1 A - To create a legible prewriting document to facilitate the writing process

Materials – Laptop Cart, Excel, Teacher-made template

Procedure – Briefly discuss summer vacation including sensory details.  Introduce spreadsheet.  Brainstorm one or two ideas for each category.  Children add as many more ideas as possible under each category.  Whole group sharing.  Children may add any additional ideas to their spreadsheet.  Remind class to save work often.   Students will print their spreadsheets

Assessment

Obj. 1 – Teacher observation in oral discussion

Obj. 2 – Students need at least 2 original ideas in each category

Obj. 3 – Students have the proper information under the proper heading

Obj. 4 – Students were able to print their copy

 

Part 2 – Writing/Editing

 

Objective 1 – 3.2 A - To use the writing process to write a poem

Objective 2 – 3.2 B1 - To write a descriptive piece about summer

Objective 3 – 3.2 C2 – To use grade-appropriate knowledge of English grammar - adjectives

Objective 3 – 3.2 A10 - To edit work for basic spelling and mechanics

Materials – Prewriting spreadsheets, journals, template, editing checklist

Procedure – Display and discuss a “model poem” about winter.  Children work individually to create own poem following template or poem of their own design.

Children will edit their own work with check list.  Peer-editing.  Edit with teacher.

Assessment – Informal assessment during teacher editing.

 

Part 3 – Using Authoring Software

 

Objective 1 – 8.1A - To design an individual slide

Objective 2 – 8.1A - To import a picture from the Internet and insert it into their slide

Objective 3 - 3.2 B6 – To develop a collection of writing through a class PowerPoint to compile the poems

Materials – Laptop Cart with Internet access, finished poems

Procedure – Children work individually on their laptop to create one slide.  They will import one picture from clipart or Google Images to insert in the slide.  Files will be saved on a disk or thumb drive and transferred into the main computer where the PowerPoint will be compiled.

Assessment – Grade project using “Summer Poem and Power Point Rubric”

 

View and Enjoy PowerPoint - This would be an excellent project to showcase the children’s work during Parent/Teacher conferences.
