| ASSASSINS BECOME THE SECOND TEAM TO CLINCH A PLAYOFF SPOT |
| An Article From The Gregville Time's Jim Carr GREGVILLE, HC -- Despite falling on the weekend to the RumpyVill Roughousers, the Gregville Assassins become the second SHL team to clinch a playoff spot for the 2009 Copenhagen Cup run. RumpyVill edged the Assassins by a score of 3-2 at the Manson Family Center. The Assassins are having their best regular season in franchise history which started back on draft day in Gregville with some solid picks by GM Greg Manson. Scott City mathematically eliminated the Olchowyville Leafs from the playoffs with a 5-1 win at the Spectrum. Sophomore Jonathon Toews has stepped up his game as of late for the Grrrowl and notched 2 goals and 2 assists in the win. Scott City also locked up first place with the win in Olchowyville; they hold a 15 point lead over the second place Assassins heading into the final week of regular season play. Brantown was unable to gain any ground and clinch a playoff spot on the weekend. They ended up tying the Gangbang 2-2 at the Brantown Communiplex. The Slammers are currently in third place eleven points back from the second place Assassins. Only eleven points separate the Slammers from the ninth place Dionland Twisters. Fort Mac has earned ties in back to back games and reside in eighth spot only one point out of the playoffs. Derek Berg and the Iceholes improved their chances of making the playoffs with a 4-2 win over the Natives. Bergland sit two points behind the third place Slammers in fourth spot. Alexander Ovechkin is close to the 50 goal plateau with the season ending soon. The Natives are winless in give games and are looking like the weakest link left out of the teams that are still able to make the playoffs in the final week. In Adamville, the Falcons were doubled up 4-2 by the Markerville Six Guns. With that the two teams are currently tied for the sixth and final playoff spot with 151 points each. The Six Guns players are currently playing for their GM Mark Macfie who underwent a successful liver transplant at the USC (University of Scott City) Hospital last Monday. Both teams have a tough task ahead of them in the final week to make the playoffs. Adamville visits the first place Grrrowl and the Six Guns host the Iceholes at the Pilsner Center. The Petes were finally mathematically eliminated in week 22 by the defending Copey Cup Champs, the Dionland Twisters. The Twisters won 3-2 at the Gatorade Center; Captain Jarome Iginla led the charge for the Twists. The Twisters may find themselves in the same boat as last season heading into the last week. Only two points out of the playoffs and playing against the eleventh place Leafs, Dionland could possibly sneak into the playoffs again. The only thing that is set in stone for the 2008-2009 SHL Playoffs is that the Scott City Grrrowl will receive the first place bye into the semi-finals. Everything else is not. It is likely that Gregville will capture the second place bye into the Western Division Championship game. Then there is a log jam. There is a possible eight teams that could make the remaining four playoff spots. The tenth place Natives are only three points out of the playoff picture. It is the SHL and anything can happen in week 23, it should make for a very exciting week of hockey and a good indication of how close the playoffs will be. |
