SCOTT CITY,TC -- The Scott City Grrrowl finally captured what they have been waiting six season for; the most prized trophy in all of sports, the Holy Grail; the Copenhagen Cup. On April 9th the Grrrowl won the franchises first Copenhagen Cup by defeating the Fort Macfie Gangbang. They also captured their fourth Eastern Division Championship. The last time an Eastern Division team won the Copenhagen Cup was in the inaugural season of the SHL when the RumpyVill Roughousers defeated the Dionland Twisters.
Scott City was able to overcome a slow start to the season. Following a week seven loss to RumpyVill, the Grrrowl were in the SHL basement in twelfth place. They were able to rally for seventeen straight wins. The sixteenth win was in large part to a shutout from rookie netminder Brian Elliot that got the Grrrowl past the Brantown Slammers in the semi-finals. The Copenhagen Cup seen for the first time two brother GMs battle it out with Scott Macfie�s Grrrowl taking on his brother Craig�s Fort Macfie Gangbang. The Grrrowl ended up winning the final series 4-2.
Alexei Kovalev was named the playoffs most valuable player with huge point production in the final two series�. Captain Mike Modano hoisted the Copey� Cup for the Grrrowl following the win. GM Scott Macfie commented �Everyone in our dressing room put forth everything they could in our 17 game run to the Copenhagen Cup. Alex (Kovalev) was sensational for us. Brian Elliot had the biggest individual performance to get us past Brantown, probably one of the most exciting finishes to a series in SHL history. Our team had a lot of depth and that turned out to be the key in us winning our organizations first Cup of many to come. We commend the Gangbang organization for their push to make the playoffs and to advance to the finals. They are a great squad and deserve a lot of recognition.�
The Copenhagen Cup parade down the Green Mile is slated for May 25th in Scott City. It will be a well deserved parade for the fans of the Grrrowl as they are the most passionate fans in the Saskatchewan Hockey League. The Green Mile had an estimated 60,000 people storm the streets following the final seconds ticking off the clock in the championship game. It will be a exciting summer in Scott City as they look to repeat next year to match the Dionland Twisters SHL record of two Copenhagen Cup wins. |
