Tenchi Taken Off of Toonami Lineup...Permanently?

July 7, 2001

According to the reliable source Planet Namek, Tenchi in Tokyo, which is currently being shown as part of the Toonami block, will be taken off the air, perhaps permanently, on July 20, 2001. The following week, the show Mobile Suit Gundam will be put on the air.
It has been confirmed with Cartoon Network that there are no plans to put any of the three Tenchi series on the air on Cartoon Network, since they would all just be continuous reruns (and there are currently no plans for Cartoon Network to bring any of the three movies or the two Pretty Sammy series on the air).
Also, the highly anticipated 3rd OAV series (a new "season" of Tenchi Muyo! series), in production in Japan, probably will not be released until 2002, too far ahead for any planning. And since both OAVs so far have been short (both less than 10 episodes), no one knows if it will be put on Cartoon Network. However, it has been hinted and rumored that the 3rd OAV would be longer than the two previous ones (see previous story).
Planet Namek says that it isn't the end of the world, or the beginning of the end of the Toonami block, because an old-new anime series (Mobile Suit Gundam, which is over 20 years old) will be put in its place. If it ever does get put back on the air, it will probably go on its old pattern, starting with the OAV series and following with the TV series, and then the second TV series (Shin Tenchi Muyo!).

Toonami to be Cut by One Hour

Toonami, the portion of Toonami that traditionally shows popular anime series, such as Sailor Moon, Tenchi Muyo!, and Dragon Ball Z, will be cut back by one hour. One source says jokingly that it will probably be replaced by "an hour of Scooby Doo."
For the new schedule, please see CartoonNetwork.com.

3rd OAV Announced by AIC!

Anime International Company (AIC) has announced that there will be a 3rd OAV of the popular series Tenchi Muyo!. It will be directed by Kajishima, the director of the previous OAV's.
The 3rd OAV will be more untraditional compared to the several other Tenchi series. Instead of concentrating with Tenchi and the girls in the Masaki household, it will concentrate more on solving the mystery with the three Goddesses. That means Ayeka, Ryoko, and the other girls will play less of a role, but Tsunami, Washu, and Tokimi will be very important. Of course, Tenchi will still be important, but the other girls will become more of side characters.
The less desirable part about the 3rd OAV is that it may bring closure to the series. According to an AIC interview on their interview page (see anime-int.com), Tenchi will choose a girl in the 3rd OAV. This may effectively bring closure to Tenchi Muyo!.
Also in production is a Tenchi spinoff series, featuring the Galaxy Police. It will not feature any of the current Tenchi characters but this series and the Tenchi series will be related.
Please see the AIC website for more information.
