To date we have lost one doctor to Sars, and many other medical staff have been infected. But the doctors, nurses and support staff continue to carry on with their work of treating and caring for the sick. To me they truly represent the spirit of she ji wei ren (putting the community before self). They have my utmost respect and deepest appreciation.

If a person’s true character is revealed under pressure, the Sars crisis reveals the character of Singapore’s healthcare professionals as outstandingly calm, committed and courageous. The way in which they have risen to the extraordinary challenge of the past weeks, continuing to care for desperately ill people despite the possible risk to themselves, makes us proud to be a Singapore company, They have our respect and our thanks, and we wish them and their families the best of all things during these difficult times.
Cheng Wai Keung, chairman, Neptune Orient Lines
Most people are risk averse. We do not willingly put ourselves into hazardous situations if we can avoid them. In the fight against Sars, Singapore’s healthcare professionals in general, and the staff of Tan Tock Seng Hospital in particular, have stepped forward to put their duty ahead of their own well-being. They have demonstrated the kind of courage and dedication to their calling which deserve our respect and gratitude. I am, therefore, honoured to have this opportunity, on behalf of everyone at SingTel, to express our deep appreciation of the efforts of these extraordinary people.
Lee Hsien Yang, CEO, Singapore Telecom
We just need to ask ourselves which other professionals are courageous enough to place their lives and safety at risk to care for strangers. To all the doctors and nurses, medical service staff and research personnel, no words could describe the admiration and respect you deserve.

Jannie Tay, managing director, The Hour Glass
The one positive aspect that has come out of Sars is that it has made us conscious of the selfless and courageous spirit of our medical workers – from the doctors, nurses, to the cleaners – something that in normal times, most of us tend to take for granted. It is often sad that people in the frontline of the medical industry regard their work as a vocation. I think I appreciate this term better now. How else one can explain why someone is willing to risk their life in the course of serving others, if not for the love of humanity? I salute medical workers in Singapore and all the Sars-stricken countries.
Frank Benjamin, executive chairman, FJ Benjamin

I think they (healthcare workers) are absolute heroes. The real heroes in any crisis are those who operate on the frontlines. Terry O’Connor, managing director, Courts Singapore The war in Iraq will inevitably show up its fair share of heroes. But right here in Singapore, in our own backyeard, the battlefield of Sars are already unmasked our own heroes and heroines – the doctors, nurses and healthcare workers who battle to save lives, while putting their own lives at risk. We appreciate you. Tang Wee Sung, chairman & CEO, CK Tang What’s the best thing we can do for our doctors, nurses and the other hospital staff who are risking their lives to fight the Sars battle? I ythink that besides paying tribute to them, we should all be socially responsible. As both individuals and corporate citizens, we have a moral responsibility to help prevent the spread of Sars, and not to add stress and pressure to our healthcare providers.. We are going to face many tough challenges ahead – be it at personal, corporate or national level. We can choose to moan and groan over it. Or we can choose to face the challenges bravely and positively. Let’s take a leaf from our medical staff and brace ourselves for the bumpy road before us. Press on, doctors and nurses. And press on, Singaporeans. S Chandra Das, chairman, NTUC FairPrice The doctors, nurses and healthcare workers have done our nation proud. They have put their olives on the line, battling to safeguard our well-being. We at Keppel Corp applaud their commitment, devotion and courage. Lee Chee Onn, executive chairman, Keppel Corp I have the utmost respect and admiration for all those on the frontline dealing with Sars. Like everyone of us, these frontline people have the same fears and concerns about their own well-being and that of their families. Yet when they put on their uniforms, they choose to put aside personal fears to serve the call of duty. We salute their courage and dedication. Paul Chan, managing director, HP Asia-Pacific Healthcare workers deserve all our support. This is a war , and they are on the frontline, putting their life at risk to save the rest of us. I don’t knoe what concrete steps we can take to accord them more recognition, but we should do something. I’d like to tell the nurses, doctors and support staff at TTSH and the other hospitals that I feel humbled by their courage, dedication and endurance. On behalf of my colleagues at work and my family, I thank the healthcare workers and salute them for all that they are doing. Richard Eu, CEO, Eu Yan Sang

To all the fighters of Sars, you are the pathfinders through this dark moment in time. We salute you.
Sim Wong Hoo, chairman & CEO, Creative Technology
The nation owes a debt of gratitude to the team at TTSH, fighting on the frontline against this insidious invader that causes Sars. We are saddened by the news of healthcare workers falling ill in the course of their duty, and are awed by the bravery of those who stoically soldier on. While the general public is called upon to be vigilant and take precautions, we know that the key barrier standing between us and rampant infections is the team at TTSH. A simple, though heartfelt, ‘thank you’ doesn’t seem adequate.
Ron Sim, CEO & chairman, Osim

Doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers supporting the provisoiin of medical care to people in need of such care, show a selfless dedication to ensuring the well being of others, often at substantial risk to themselves. The spirit with which the doctors and other healthcare workers of Singapore have rallied to give of themselves to help contain the Sars problem, is a tribute to this noble profession.
