Task 1: Putting it in Perspective
*Task to be completed after reading Chapter 21*
Lagos and the events of Graceland may seem very far away at first, but through closer examination we realize that the exact events may be different, but the brutality is the same. For this task you will be contemplating how very far away Lagos is to us. We may be closer to their way of life than we realize.
Look at the following links and think about what distances us from the people and events of Graceland. Ask yourself if you are really as far away from Nigeria as you originally believed.
Where does the novel take place?
Fiction and history collide?
Read the following short story, then review Chapter 21 in Graceland starting on page 223.
Reflect on the events in the short story and the novel before moving on to watching the video. It is graphic and disturbing. Watch parts if you want, or none at all. If you choose not to watch it, say so in your analysis and move on to the next part of this task.
Closer than we thought?
Below are links to pictures and articles. Review them all, keeping in mind where these events took place and who was involved. Also, think about the decisions that need to be made when contemplating these links.
Task 1:
After viewing and reading the above links contemplate Nigeria, Graceland, and how far we really are from these such events we witness in the text. Write a 1-2 page essay reflecting on this, bringing in the sources above to strengthen your arguement. Post your argument on your blog as "Task 1" and put a copy in your portfolio.
Once completed, wait until finishing Chapter 25 to move on.
