Typically, there's a wince accompanying the words "independent, self-produced, cassette EP." Not so in this case. Universe, a six-song sampling from Toronto suburbanite Sarah Slean, is a strong opus in any medium. Its strength is in the songs. In "I Know," there is a certain desolation that flickers like it would if you were watching a gritty black and white Fassbinder film. A dreamed outing with J.D. Salinger is recounted in "Me and Jerome," and the title cut is as spacious as it promises, making you feel at once small and yet significant. Ignore the girl-with-piano motif and the obvious musical comparisons, since beyond these is an arpeggio-tinted framework where a naive hope shines through some awe-filled darkness.
