The beautiful, pixie-like chanteuse, 25-year-old Sarah Slean was born in Pickering, Ontario. Claiming that she starting learning the piano while in the womb (her mother started taking lessons while pregnant with her), the very musical Slean started writing musicals at the tender age of nine, performing them for her family. In her teens, she began writing her own tunes and hitting the open stages of Toronto. Like a moth to a flame, audiences were quite taken with the young Slean. With beautiful, moving pieces such as Twin Moon and Playing Cards with Judas, it wasn't hard to imagine that the talented Slean would go places. In 1998, she released the EP Universe, which was picked up by an Atlantic exec in the states. Slean was approached for a record deal, but she didn't think she was ready to put out a major label CD yet. So all agreed to let Slean record another indie CD - belonging to her - so that she could figure out her sound and get more practice in the studio. This EP turned out to be Blue Parade, released in 1999. Unlike many other independent artists, Slean managed to sell close to 15,000 copies of her indie CDs. After Blue Parade, Slean teamed up with Canadian-rocker Hawksley Workman to record her first major-label CD. In 2002, Slean released Night Bugs across Canada and immediately began touring to promote it. Covering the bulk of Canada, and part of the United States, Slean has begun work on her next album, and continues work on a musical she plans to launch in Toronto - based on one of the characters from Night Bugs. Without a doubt, Slean is out to conquer all genres of the arts - and will most likely come out with flying colors. |
