The Pursuit of Excellence

By Mike Fisher
Brock Press, January 29, 1998

Ive said it before and Ill say it again, Sarah Slean is going to be huge. She has the perfect mix of talent, ability and enthusiasm. All of which were evident during her performance at the Mind Bomb Caf last week.

The crowd was treated to a mix of tracks from Sleans independent cassette Universe, as well as some unreleased songs. Included in the batch of new material was a song devoted to a popular Canadian musician entitled Rockstar.

Careful not to say who it was, but clever enough to drop a number of clues, Slean recounted the story of how this particular song was born. Apparently this unnamed rock star left less than a favourable impression on Slean after a short phone relationship.

She wrote the first version of the song with lyrics that reflected her feelings about the singer. However, things have since changed. The rock star in question and his band have begun performing Sleans version of their song and as a result, Slean re-wrote the lyrics to reflect the change in attitude.

It seemed that just about every song was accompanied by a similarily interesting story. Thats the magic of a Sarah Slean show. It is more than just the music, although her music is the main draw, it is the whole show that impresses.

Moe Berg took the stage after Sleans performance. Bergs show was unfortunately less memorable. After the first two songs it was definitely obvious that Berg was missing something. Most notably a band, his band, The Pursuit of Happiness, although any band would have done.

The show picked up a bit after this initial feeling of isolation dissipated and Berg seemed to come into his own. His show consisted of mostly songs from his new album, but he did break down and play a TPOH song or two, including Im an adult now. He attempted another TPOH song but needed help from the audience to completes the first verse.

Rumour has it that Slean will be back in town as early as March. Until then you can pick up a copy of her six-song EP, Universe, at Tantrum Records in downtown St. Catharines.
