Sarah Slean's universal appeal

By Mike Fisher
Brock Press, January 22, 1998

Pickering, Pickering shes from Pickering. I cant believe shes from Pickering. This was my first experience with Sarah Slean.

It was this summer at the NXNE music festival in Toronto. Slean was playing the acoustic stage and the awestruck spectator was working the Chart Magazine table near the stage. By the end of her set, Slean proved that Pickering has more to offer the world than nuclear power.

Jump back 13 years when Slean was seven. It was at this point that she began playing the piano. By nine she had begun writing her own songs. A pretty impressive accomplishment given that most nine-year-olds have little more to worry about than getting the cooties from a classmate.

Anyone proficient in math will have deduced that the performer I speak of is only in her twentieth year. Her music though, plays as though it was written by someone many years her senior.

How Slean has time to rehearse and perform is a feat of incredible time management. In addition to her budding musical career, Slean is a music student at the University of Toronto and holds down a part time job.

Talking to Slean, however, it is easy to determine just where her priorities lay. Music tend to supersede everything, the enthusiastic Slean comments, adding that music is something of an obsession for her.

While obviously involved with music from an early age, Slean only began publicly performing last January. In that time she has played a number of with the likes of Noah Mintz (hHead, Noahs Arkweld), and more recently Mo Berg of The Pursuit of Happiness. Slean offers that this has given her a taste of travelling and so far the experience has been enjoyable.

Rarely do you hear anyone speak with as much passion and excitement as Slean when talking about music. When asked if she plans to pursue a musical career based on her experience over the past year, she answered with a definitive Oh God yeah!

With one EP under her hat and another in the works and a fairly regular touring schedule, including a stop at the Mindbomb Caf with Mo Berg tonight, Slean is well on her way to fulfilling her goal of making music a lasting and fruitful part of her life.
