Day 6 princesse de provence
Pont du Gard   pm
the Avingon bridge
Pont du Gard with very old olive tree
I LOVED this tree it is so old!
Do not go here on a tour when it is 100 degres and you dont have time to swim.
The water looked so cool. When I go back here I am renting a kayak and spending some time enjoying myself.
This is what the top looks like. The channel for the water is 4 feet wide and 6 feet high.
Some new grafitti
Avingon song
Pont du Gard Roman  built around 7 b.c.It is part of a 31 mile long aquaduct.
It was designed to carry water from Uzes to the Roman city of Nimez
The first level is a road, it was widened  in 1743
No mortar was used in building the huge stones (up to 6 tons each) are held in place with iron clamps
The aquaduct delivered 44 million gallons of water a day.
Jim wishing he was in the water.
Lower level has 6 arches, middle level has 11 arches, upper level has 35 arches.
The huge blocks were lifted in place using block and tackle with a massive human powered treadmill providing power for the winch. It took three years to build and used between 800 and 1,000 workers
Just look at all those happy wet people.
After visiting the Pont de Guard we went to Uzes the source of the water that flowed through the aquaduct. We saw the source but it was just bars across a doorway with steps leading down.
I loved this imp face on the center fountain
Here is the whole fountain

This was our tour guide....a German woman who lived in France. She actually said Americans dont walk and she asked us if we would be able to do the walking that was involved on the tour..(maybe 1/4 mile) ..Jim and I are a good 10 to 30 years younger than the others in the group...I was insulted to say the least.

It was about 100 degres and humid. No one in their right mind was out and about
