The action of self-sacrifice is defined as "the act of sacrificing one's self, or one's interest, for other; self devotion",

In the labrynth, Sarah who initially called upon the Goblin King to take her brother away, gives herself for his safe return.  She is given the choice to forget about Toby and have all of her dreams come true.  Instead, she chooses to venture into the maze in a quest for her brother.  Once overcoming the many opsticals in her path, Sarah reaches the castle and sees her brother.  He is out of reach to her and it is here that she takes a leap of faith, literally and figuratively to save him.  This self-sacrifice shows that the love she has for her brother outweighs the interest of her own well-being.  In Christian faith this concept is realized.  Many Saints have been appointed to their stature for this very same display of selflessness.

"Only to the extent that someone is living out this self transendence of human exisitence is he truly human or does he become his true self.  He becomes so, not, by concerning himself with his self's actualization, but by forgetting himself and giving himself, overlooking himself and focusing outward."  ~Victor Frank~
