The words XYZZY, PLUGH and PLOVER are legends of old...mystic words woven into your Colossal Cave adventure.
XYZZY is in one of the first rooms and sends you to the building. In this room, there is a note that says, "Magic word XYZZY". This is the easiest one to recognize as a magic word- after all, it says so!.
PLUGH is in the Y2 room and also sends you to the building. In the Y2 room, you are alerted to its presence by this message: "A hollow voice whispers, "Plugh."
PLOVER is in the Plover Room and sends you to the Y2 room. Nothing except the room name gives you a clue to its presence.
These magic words have gotten acclaim, especially XYZZY. Many modern games give responses to them. Minesweeper, for instance, has a code/cheat involving "xyzzy" for the Windows 3.1 version. If you type in the hallowed phrase, the game allows you to spot mines without clicking. Very useful sometimes. Many works of IF give humorous responses to them.
