Arctic Ocean Plants

By Dawn Kiser

Phytoplankton
The Arctic Ocean has very little plant life due to the extremely cold temperatures. What it does have are plants called Phytoplankton. These minutely sized plants provide the basis for life in the Arctic by living at the bottom of the food chain. The image below might look large, but the plant can in reality, only be viewed through a microscope.

Three Key Factors
Have you ever heard the saying "great things come in small packages"? Phytoplankton are great! They provide food for ocean animals, oxygen for people, and reduce carbon dioxide in the environment.
