Chapter One: 19914

“I’m falling.  How can I be falling?  Where am I falling to?”  Those were the last thoughts that went through the man’s mind as he plumetted through the darkness.  The darkness encased his body, sheltering it as he fell from the city in the sky.  Black feathers made a halo around his head as his wings steadily disappeared the closer he got to the ground.

“Aww man!  I’m so late!!”  Kellie ran out the door of her apartment building and took off for the restaurant she worked at.  She cursed herself over and over for not remembering to set the alarm like she should have.  “Guess I’ll have to take the short cut.”  She zipped around a corner and into an alleyway.  Only to trip and fall right on her face over something.

“Of all the goddamn places to put a…”  The words trailed off on her lips as she stared down at the dark haired creature lying on the ground.  He was lying on what appeared to be black feathers and he had a slight head wound.  Kellie looked right and left quickly, trying to see if there was anyone suspicious around.

“He doesn’t look dangerous.  In fact he looks kind of cute.  Okay Kellie, you are going insane girl.  You trip over some strange dead guy in the middle of the alleyway and all you can think about is he looks cute.”  She mentally berated herself before she felt something on her thigh.  She stiffened in fright and looked down, to find a hand there.  Chill bumps appeared on her arms and the hair on the back of her neck rose in sheer terror.  Then she felt the hand squeeze her thigh and she shrieked.

“Pervert!!!”  She whacked the guy on the back of the head as she scrambled to get away from the man lying on the ground.  She heard him groan and sit up, her eyes wide with terror as she stared at him clutching her hands at her chest.

“Why’d you hit me?”  The man’s voice was gruff and he sounded angry.  He scratched the back of his head in irritation, the blasted thing had hit him for no apparrant reason.  He looked over at her and glared at her, his dark blue eyes blazing with fury.

“Oh boy, now you’re in for it Kellie.  He’s going to kill you!”  Kellie panicked as these thoughts fired around in her head.  She looked at the man almost helplessly and cringed away as he reached towards her.  “Please don’t hurt me!  Please!!”  She begged as tears ran down her face.

“Hurt you?  Why would I do that…?”  The man looked around almost blankly, he couldn’t even remember how he got to this place.  “Where am I?”

Kellie looked at him like he was nuts.  “You’re in Section 45 of Hades.”  Kellie ran a hand through her short, brown hair.  She hated her hair being short but it was a law.  Any unmarried women had to wear their hair short to let the men know they were available.  She looked at the man with curious dark brown eyes.  She didn’t sense anything hostile coming from him, and he seemed confused.

“Hades?”  The man still looked confused.  He shook his head as if trying to clear it and grabbed it in pain.  His hand came away slightly bloody from the cut on his forehead.

“It’s what we call the Lower City.  Hades.  It’s like the mythical underworld from the old stories.”  Kellie stood up and extended her hand towards him.  “What’s your name?”

“19914.  19914.  19914.”  Those numbers repeated themselves through the man’s head.  He clutched his head to get them to stop as they got louder and louder the more they repeated.

“Hey, are you okay?”  Kellie reached towards him and gently touched one of his hands.  He looked up at her with surprise and fear in his eyes.  The noises had stopped when she had touched him.

“I-I’m fine.  The only thing I remember is this series of numbers.  19914.”  He shook his head again and stood up shakily.  He hated being this weak, and that puzzled him.  Why would he hate the way he was at the moment, weak?  He reached out and grasped the wall for support as he suddenly swayed.

“19914 huh?  Well, I don’t usually do this… But I’ll make an exception in your case.  You can come stay at my place, in exchange you have to help out the boss at work.”  Kellie winked at him.  The boss had been complaining about being short staffed and she had found the solution.

She looked at the man in front of her.  His hair was shaggy and his face looked like it needed a good shave, but he still looked rather cute.  Not handsome by any means but he still looked cute.  His build was athletic, he was more lean than built.  The guy also looked to be around her age, early to mid twenties.  He stood about three to four inches taller than her so he had to be about 6 feet or taller.  She held her chin in her hand as she studied him.  Dark brown hair, almost black, and deep blue eyes.  She thought he’d be great for business as well as work.

“Work?  Your place?”  The poor guy was confused as all hell and he looked it.  Kellie sighed and shook her head.  She carefully explained everything to him.

“Oh!  That sounds like a good idea.  It might be fun to help.”  The guy grinned and Kellie blushed slightly.  He looked really cute when he smiled, but she quickly hid her blush.

“All right.  Come on, I’ll introduce you to the boss.”  She took his hand and started towards the restaurant.

“You are late!!”  The boss yelled at her the minute she walked into the kitchen.  Kellie cringed away from the sheer decibel of the old man’s voice but she grinned.

“I have a new guy to help ya boss.  He’s the reason I was late this morning!”  Kellie smiled happily and tugged on 19914’s hand to bring him in.  He stumbled in and straightened quickly.  He looked almost sheepish as he stood there.

“He looks like he can handle a few chores.  Gotta ask him some questions though.”  The boss glared at Kellie before he walked into his office.  Luckily, Kellie had filled in 19914 on the way to the restaurant.  She had given him a fake alias to use until they figured out his real name.

“He’s kinda scary…”  Kellie nodded but she ushered him into the office assuring him it would be okay.  She scurried out to the main dining room to help the other waitresses with orders.

Fifteen minutes later 19914 walked through the double doors to the main dining area.  The female customers instantly stopped chattering and stared, it was rare the restaurant got male servers.  The boss had dressed 19914 up in a black tux and he looked good in it.

Kellie caught the other waitresses drooling and rolled her eyes.  She wanted to drool as well, but she had a job to do.  She needed this job to help pay bills and she got to it.  The male customers all appreciated the service since the other waitresses seemed to have gone AWOL.

19914 was trying to do as the boss had instructed him, but people were getting in his way.  He saw Kellie a few tables over and pleaded with her to help him.  The other waitresses looked at him strangely, they had never seen his kind before.

“Okay girls.  It’s back to work.  We all have jobs to do remember?”  Kellie had a brisk tone that dared someone to argue with her.  None of the other girls ever wanted to go against her, she was too formidable looking.

“Yes ma’am.”  They went back to their jobs quickly and without too much fuss.  19914 looked grateful with tears rolling down his face.  Kellie shook her head at his silliness and continued with her work.

After the restaurant closed the boss let 19914 stay, only they had given him the alias of Zac.  The boss decided to keep ‘Zac’ on board the wait staff as he kept up morale and they had a lot more customers that night.

‘Zac’ blushed at the praise he was being given.  Kellie sighed and turned to head back to her apartment.  19914 rushed after her easily catching up to her.  Kellie wondered about that as she had a very brisk pace.

“You said I can stay with you?”  He looked at her almost eagerly, he liked this girl.  She treated him like a normal human being.  He stopped suddenly, wondering where that had come from.  He caught up to her again after realizing she had left him.

“Yeah, until you can save up for an apartment of your own.”  19914 laughed at her disgruntled expression.  She glared and swatted at him for laughing at her.  “Quit laughing at me!”  She huffed and crossed her arms in mock anger.  She couldn’t stay mad at him no matter how hard she tried.  He was just too adorable.

“Thanks.”  He smiled at her, a smile full of warmth.  It caused Kellie to blush in embarrassment, but she swatted at him again to hide it.  He dodged her attempts at hitting him while laughing.  He hoped she could help him figure out who he was and where he came from, but until then… He had fun teasing her and wanted to tease her some more she was fun!
