![]() Welcome to the Caravelle Home Page! This homepage is dedicated to the few Caravelles left in service. I am making a Caravelle for the greatest flight sim in the world Fly! This attractive and inovative French aircraft was the first in the world to fly with two engines hung on the sides of the rear fuselage. It was designed by the former French national group SNCASE ( the Sud-Est nationalized company ) to meet government SGACC specifications for a short-haul jet written in 1951. At that time the very concept of a short-range jet transport was judged to be of doubtful value, since the saving in time seemed so insignificant and the extra cost in fuel, compared with modern propeller-driven aircraft, likely to be considerable -- especially as over sectors the aircraft would hardly cruise at the great heights where jet engines are more efficient. As finally issued in November 1951 the SGACC requirement called for a payload of 6 to 7 tonnes carried at 700km/h (435mph) over a range og 1930 km (1200miles). Structurally the design was clean and modern, with a three-spar wing
with the modest sweepback of 20 degrees and a high aspect ratio, unussual
for the jets at the time, a circular-section fuselage and extremely short
landing gear.
