Arrogant display of elite power at Congress rally
The militant group Sanlakas today scored on what they claim as "arrogant display of elite power" in a Cory-led rally held at Congress yesterday in support of Chief Justice Hilario Davide. The House of Representatives was virtually under-siege yesterday from the Cory-led rally of pro-GMA civil society groups and well-heeled personalities from posh Makati villages. The rally, both inside and outside the session hall, paralyzed the operation of Congress as pro-Davide protesters were allowed entry up to the gallery. Outside the main hall, the pro-Davide protesters heckled congressmen who endorsed the impeachment complaint against Davide. "What we have seen yesterday was an arrogant display of elite power presiding over a discussion on elite democracy, " Sanlakas President Wilson Fortaleza said. "Cory and the well-heeled appear to have exclusive franchise of Philippine democracy not only because they were allowed by JDV to stage a rally inside the Batasan Complex, but also because they portray themselves as the only defenders of democracy while unfairly painting those at the other side of this debate as evil plotters," Fortaleza added. But Fortaleza said they never saw these people cry for justice and democracy when unions are busted, communities are demolished, people massacred, etc. which are also issues of justice and democracy involving ordinary people. "If they are really for democracy, they should have marched and rallied in defense of the helpless squatters who were forcibly evicted by the government from the Batasan area during the Bush visit. They should also have marched against GMA for forswearing her neutrality on the issue and for facilitating a deal with Danding for possible settlement," Fortaleza continued. Fortaleza disclosed that their representative, Sanlakas Rep. J.V. Bautista, withdrew his endorsement of the impeachment complaint mainly because the party does not want to be dragged into an intra-elite fight that has already poisoned the atmosphere and shrouded the merits of the impeachment case. He said the masses will gain nothing from this exercise since the warring elites have their own way of resolving their conflicts, either through headlong fight or through a compromise settlement.
