| Gleaning a multitude of entertaining anecdotes from her own recollections, the author spent time as well, on many walks down Memory Lane with the stables' proprietors, ranch hands, and former associates. The result is a delightfully entertaining read that will find you sometimes chuckling, sometimes crying and always in awe of the antics of these equine characters. Her only regret is that the horses themselves cannot speak--to convey silly-human stories, of which there would surely be many. Life has transported Sandra down many divergent roads, having proferred her a degree in psychology (English minor) from Iona College and having propelled her to Wall Street as a Human Resources bank executive. Other career paths (or career moments) included real estate, the freight shipping business and a stint with the Federal government in the Small Business Administration and Office of Education. Currently horses, writing and editing occupy a significant portion of her time, as she regularly performs copy editing for author Terry Ruscin and assists job seekers with resumes and the like. Sandra has lived in six states--Wisconsin, Florida, Colorado, Connecticut, New York and Pennsylvania, and today enjoys an active retirement with her husband Curtis in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. Skiing, hiking, biking and riding horses remain favorite activities, after which a visit to local wineries is always a treat. Extensively well traveled, Sandra has visited 35 states and at least 17 other countries, her favorite of which remains Italy. "You can't get a bad meal in Italy," she maintains, after two vacations there totalling four weeks time. "I'm hard-pressed to choose a favorite Italian city, though. I love the countryside, and a tiny town called Lucca holds fond memories. Thus far, however, I've visited only Rome and north of Rome. If I return, I promise to enjoy the south." Sandra is as well a health enthusiast, believing in tenets such as: - All things in moderation - Avoid pharmaceuticals and mainstream doctors as much as possible - Laughter truly is the best medicine - A little sunshine never hurt anyone (refer to tenet #1) - Avoid processed foods - Try to eat organically - Avoid sugar - And most importantly, "Get up off-a that thing!" About the Author During her childhood in Altoona, Wisconsin, Sandra De Vonish was better acquainted with cows and dairy farms than with horses and ranches. Having loved horses since toddler-hood, she was destined for equines to one day play a role in her life. Lending a hand for over five years at Triple W Stables in Hawley/Honesdale, Pennsylvania, and having been a frequent rider there for ten years before her volunteer service, Sandra was amply qualified to record the memoirs of the stables' 60+ horses. |
