| GOLDEN DAWN, THE Founded in 1887 by W. Wescott, A. F. A Woodford, S.L. MacGregor Mathers, and W. Woodman this occult society of magickal practice that embellished its rites with Greek and Egyptian themes. The organization deciphered books, distributed tomes and manuscupits, and also created spells, postions, and items for use in other rites. It officially disbanded in 1903. |
| GRIMOIRE A spellbook that is handed down from one generation to the next. It can also refer to the acnient books that held spells and methods of summoning. |
| GROUNDING The act of centering oneself. This process usually involves placing your "roots" down into the earth or internalizing the element of earth. |
| GREY MAGICK A form of magick that is involved with doing positive things to yourself or others. Grey magick can become either postiive or nagative depending on the wishes of the caster or other forces. |
| HEDGEMAGE A young initiate, often referred to as such by an experienced member. It can also refer to someone who possesses natural magickal ability and has received no training. |
| HEREDITARY PATH A tradition of Wicca in which one cannot be initiated but one must be born into the Pagan Ways. |
| HANDFASTING The joining of a Pagan couple for a year and a day. Thier union remains for as "long as love lasts". When love dissolves they usually enact a handparting ritual, instead of being locked in an unhealthy love. |
| HANDPARTING The ending ritual of a handfasting in which each party goes their own way with out anger or anamosity to the other. |
| HEXENBANNER A German cunning man that provided services for breaking witch's spells. A cunning man was a person who was a "white witch" of sorts, and used their abilites of beneficial ends and means. |
| HOPKINS, MATTHEW "The Witch Finder General" who is responsible for the murder of most of the accused at the Salem Witch Trials. He started his path of murder in 1644 and finally met his end from consumption in 1647. His life was a fury of over zealous hatred and arraignment of elderly women and innocents. |
| IMAGE MAGICK A form of magick that uses fith-faths as a focal point for magickal workings. Image magick can also be used on any physical item or representation if enough energy is given to the item. Voodon is the magickal path most people connect to this form of magick. |
| ILLUMINATE A religous oder created by Adam Weishaupt in 1776. Its goals were to attain the highest level of spiritual development through moral pirity and virtue and to lay the foundation for the reformation of the world. Some people rumor that this organization plans for world domination. |
| GREAT RITE, THE The ast of consenting adults who perform the act of lovemaking as goddess and god. It is a powerful form of magick as well as way to seal a spell. |
| HERMETICISM A path of magick that involves its intellectual study, alchemical and astrological workings. It is based frm the writing Corpus Hermeticum, that claims that humans have the ability to control the natural world. Its main regional area of interest was Renaissance Italy. Today's Hermeticism is based mostly on Pymander which was translated into English in 1649. |
