Way
back in 1966, a group of physicians led by Dr. Oscar Quisumbing,
Sr. met and organized the San Carlos City Medical Society.
Although they were members of the Negros Occidental Medical
Society, they were so hampered by the distance that many scientific
session passed unattended by them. Feeling this loss, they
decided to form into a separate group, organizing their own
seminars, scientific meetings, CPC's, while waiting for the
PMA's approval. Then finally the long wait was over and on
May 28, 1967, the PMA granted the group full charter membership.
Philippine Medical Association President Dr. Pacifico Marcos,
together with Negros Occidental Medical Society president,
Dr. Leonardo Gallardo and Western Visayas councilor, Dr. Jose
Abueg came to San Carlos to present the charter membership
plaque and to formally induct into office Dr. Oscar Quisumbing
Sr. as President, Dr. Dionisio Wee as Vice President, Dr.
Antonio Ong as Secretary-Treasurer, dr. Jose Roca, Jr. as
Auditor and Dr. Roberto Alba as PRO. Dr. Tranquilino Carmona
and Dr. Enrique Gauzon were the councilors. The original members
numbered eighteen, and although some have left abroad, membership
has not been affected much because new members have come in
and joined the society.
The
next year, Dr. Dionisio Wee was elected president with Dr.
Jose Trinidad as his Vice President. Dr. Arturo Cruz was society's
outstanding physician for the year. At the annual PMA convention
in Iloilo, six members attended the affair. The following
year, the same officers were reelected and as in the previous
year, free clinics, scientific meetings, medicine week celebrations,
deworming programs were held with the help of some generous
sponsors. The society's outstanding physician was Dr. Oscar
Quisumbing Sr. and the PMA convention at Baguio City saw six
members again attending the affair.

which had to kept in the good condition and should be able
to help indigent patients. San Carlos City Medical Society
was the choice of the group and for that the members worked
into deserving and preserving the honor. Up to the present
the unit has helped a number of patients who otherwise could
not have had X-rays at the usual rates and form the income
the society has given cash donations to the PMA and to the
families of two deceased members of the group.
In
1970, Dr. Enrique Gauzon was elected president with the other
officers at status quo. Outstanding physician that year was
Dr. Jose Roca, Jr. Seven members attended the PMA convention
at Cebu City. That year marked membership of the most of the
members into the MATEF.
Dr.
Tranquilino Carmona was the president the next year with Dr.
Antonio Ong as his vice-president. Unlike the previous years,
only four members were present at the PMA convention in Pasay
City. Dr. Dionisio Wee was outstanding physician of the society.
Next
year, Dr. Jose Trinidad came out president with Dr. Adolfo
Briones as his vice president.
SUCCEEDING
YEARS saw several members served as president of the society.
Dr. Adolfo Briones, Dr. Eugenio Antonio III, Dr. Minerva Alcarde,
Dr. Edgardo Quisumbing, Dr. Warlito Caturay, Dr. Antonio Ong,
Dr. Alfredo Carampatan, Dr. Jose Carlos Villarante and Dr.
Larry Yap, Dr. Victoriano Peral, and Dr. Filped Maisog. Two
incumbent presidents passed away during their term Dr. Antonio
Ong succumbed to cancer while Dr. Alfredo Carampatan had a
fatal attack of Asthma.
The
long cherished dream of the society - that of acquiring its
own lot and putting up its own building has bugged the officers
and the members. The society has not realized this dream yet.
It is quite a big ambition for such a small group, but with
strong will, the members hope to see one day this long cherished
dream come true.
