| African-Americans have long struggled to serve as equals in the military. The same patriotism and love of freedom drives everyone, and with it is the willingness to protect our country. From the 54th Massachusettes Regiment in the Civil War to the Buffalo Soldiers on the Western Frontier to Dorie Miller to those who serve now, African-Americans have displayed honor, integrity, and courage while breaking down some of the racial barriers even before the Equal Rights Movement.
