IV Committee Reports:
a) Frances Armenta: Teachers were encouraged to see Annette to get See’s suckers to sell. The money helps with students’ scholarships.
b) Shuping Wang: If you have not received their CCAE membership card, look at your paycheck stub to see if payroll has been taking money from you. Glenda let everyone know about becoming a CCAE Sesquicentennial Member for the 150th year celebration. It’s $150 for this special membership.
c) Susan Dela Cruz: The spring potluck is on Friday, March 24. The Social Committee is making preparations for the Mardi Gras, which is the theme of the party. The committee asked for an allowance for decorations and prizes for the games being prepared. Susan stated that $70 had already been spent on supplies. Discussion ensued about spending money before it was approved by the membership. It was decided that the allocated amount would not exceed $77. A motion was made by Frances Armenta and seconded by Nikki Amaro to allocate $77 towards the potluck. Motion passed. Everyone was encouraged to sign-up to bring food or donate $10 if unable to cook.
d) Teresa Loftis: The last group of three GED Award Applications was ineligible. There was one recipient who was paid in January and we haven’t heard if they passed the GED test yet.. A suggestion was made to have posters made to entice students to sign-up for the scholarships. Students need to get applications from GED teachers. Brenda Rivas said that some students lack hours to qualify. GED teachers need to be reminded every month, if possible. Janice will remind them.
e) Kim Eatmon: In Kim’s absence, Annette reminded us that we need nominations for 2006-2007 CCAE Board. Let Kim know if you would like to be considered for a position. CCAE recognition for the month of March: Ingrid Cardenas for classified and Carmen Castillo for Certificated. A special recognition for Sandy Plavin, who is not a CCAE member, but was helpful in the recent fundraiser.
V Old Business:
a) Southern Section Update: Reviewing of by-laws for Southern Section and Section Awards were discussed. The Section will decide soon if they want to collaborate on a Southern Section/
South Coast Conference to be held in San Diego in November. It will be a two-day conference like Palm Springs. There was discussion on how our Chapter felt about the joint conferences Glenda stated that there was concern about the percentage of profits the Section will receive. Co-hosting with South Coast Section would give us a variety of presenters. If the two-day weekend is not acceptable, a one-day conference in Escondido was being considered.
b) State Section Conference Update: All CCAE members should have received information regarding the State Conference in May in the mail. If interested in attending, see Annette and let’s find out if there are other funds available.
c) State Report: Glenda’s position as State Treasurer will be abolished after June.
VI New Business:
a) Legislation Day Update:
San Bernardino teamed up with Redlands Adult School enabling them to meet with more originally scheduled legislatures. The four issues that were supported by CCAE were: AB 2255 –Saturday Administration of the CAHSEE, AB2153-Adult Ed Distance Learning, AB2417 Adult Education providing CAHSEE services to high school students, and SB 368-Reform of the CBET Program. They met one assemblyman and five other Legislative Assistants. Redlands Adult School sent a nursing student, who has been a straight “A” student in college and was on the list at the community college for three years but could not get in to the nursing program. The Adult Ed programs allow students to bridge to the community colleges a lot faster. One Legislative Assistant suggested, letters be written to Maria Shriver to support and request additional funding for Adult Vocational Programs. Some legislators are not aware of the medical programs being offered at adult schools.
b) Opportunity Drawing: Teresa Loftis won.
Next meeting – April 19th 2:30 in Room A112
Meeting Adjourned 3:25 p.m.
Respectfully submitted by,
Susan Dela Cruz
