Lesson 8: The future

The future is formed by taking the infintive as a stem and adding the following endings. Except for the second person plural, these endings are identical to the verb haber with the silent letter h removed. This is because, in an earlier stage of the language, the idea of the future was expressed with infinitive + have (haber). That is, a form something like cantar he 'to sing I have' was used to mean 'I will sing'.

These endings are accented, so they are spelt with the acute accent (except for the first person plural, which doesn't need it under the usual spelling rules).

Person 'I' 'you (singular)' 'He/she/it' 'We' 'You (plural)' 'They'
Endings of future -és -emos -éis -án
Haber he has ha hemos habéis han

This gives us the following forms:

Person a-verb:
cantar 'to sing'
e-verb:
beber 'to drink'
1S 'I' cantaré 'I will sing' beberé 'I will drink'
2S 'you (singular)' cantarás 'you will sing' beberás 'you will drink'
3S 'he/she/it' cantará 'he/she/it will sing' beberá 'he/she/it will drink'
1P 'we' cantaremos 'we will sing' beberemos 'we will drink'
2P 'you (plural)' cantaréis 'you will sing' beberéis 'you will drink'
3P 'they' cantarán 'they will sing' beberán 'they will drink'
