My ideal of a mixed race utopia was shattered after only hours of being in South Africa. To a south african, many many changes have taken place. To a naive hippie, at ground level it is still pushing its way through apartheid with barbed wire and vicious guard dogs lining streets. Many whites fear blacks and propagate suspicion and paranoia. Many blacks are resentful at the continuing white control of the economy. Some whites claim positive discrimination has lead to a great rise in white unemployment and leave in their thousands for Britain each year.. And somewhat bizarrely, both whites and blacks have argued that they were all much better off under apartheid.
All of this led us to escape to the peace of Swaziland, yet with time to snap a few dangerous beasts on the way. |
