The wonderful Lu Win, one half of the comic duo The Moustache Brothers. His brother was jailed to 7 years hard labour in 1997 for a 'joke' made about the government. He goes to the prison every 2 months with food, yet has not seen his brother since his imprisonment. His now one man show continues for the benefit of tourists, and he highlights not only his brothers plight, but that of other political prisoners.
A woman from the Shan State, recognisable because of the dark clothes, bright head scarf, and traditional bag. The women work in the fields 6 days a week, and go to the market one day a week to sell their goods. They exist hand to mouth, and have no access to basic health care or education. Some villages have a mortality rate of over 50% before 2 years old.
Tissa, a monk who befriended Selina and I in Mandalay. He was studying at the Buddhist Academy, and was happy to spend time with us so he could practise his English pronunciation. The only viable 'career' options available to Burmese men is the army, or monkhood. Therefore, Burma has thousands of monks, all of whom awaken before sunrise, and file silently through the streets barefooted, gathering alms from the people.
