Sony's Playstation 2 was by far the best console 
when it appeared in North America in October 2000. It is a superb improvement of the original Playstation. The Ps2 plays DVDs, audio CDs and could fit extremely well in a family home theater.
The Ps2 has stunning graphics, maybe not as good as Microsoft Xbox's best, but overall, the Ps2 is better. To play DVDs on the Xbox, you need to buy a 50$ (canadian) kit to enable it. The Xbox console is huge compared to the small size of the Ps2. But, the Xbox lets you play your favourite audio CDs while you play your games.
As well, the Xbox has a built-in hard-drive and is ready for online play. On the other hand, the games on Ps2 are much better and the controller is much easier and better to use than the Xbox's.
As we all know, the Nintendo 64 is done with and so will soon be the Gamecube. In the current competition, Xbox and Gamecube don't stand a chance against Ps2. Xbox and Gamecube came a year after, when most people had already purchased the Ps2.
Gamecube started at 300$ (canadian) and Xbox at 450$ just like the Ps2. Last spring, Xbox and Ps2 dropped their prices to 300$ and Gamecube to 230$. Did you ever notice that Ps2 lasted so much longer at 450$ than Xbox did, almost a year longer.
