Harishchandragad by Sahyadri Explorers

Harishchandragad is one of the challenging hill fort. The fort is very ancient. Harishchandragad lies where the boundaries of Thane, Pune & Ahmednagar districts converge. It is situated just before the Malshej-ghat.

There are two ways to Harishchandragad from Pune. First one is via Pune-Alephata-otur and another one is via Pune-Narayangaon-Junnar. Both of these roads reach Khireshwar village.

On Kalyan highway there is Khubi Phata from where you can reach to Khireshwar village.

Kireshwar is small village situated at foot of the Harishchandragad. The distance between Khubi Phata and Khireshwar village is 4 k.m. From this village we have to cross 7 hills (!), to reach at the temple of Harishchandreshwar, the temple of Lord Shiva.

From Khireshwar village, the route goes straight to Tolar Khind (about 1 hour journey). Walking a few minutes from Tolar Khind, we come across a rock-patch on which railings are fixed. After ascending the railings, we come to the plateau region on which less dense forests are seen. There are many arrows help in indicating the way. (It is advisable to follow these red arrows).

Total journey from Khireshwar to Harishchandreshwar takes about 3-4 hours. Once we reach on the top then there are lots of places to visit.

Temple of Harishchandreshwar :

Temple of Harishchandreshwar is situated on a platue (see photos [1], [2]). This temple is about 15-17m high. Temple was build in 16th century. The temple is of HEMAD style temple. There are caves around the temple. These caves are one of the best spots for halt. Among all caves there is one cave with water which is a ancient water tanks. The stones which are used for constructing the temple are well finished. The fascinating thing about this temple is that it has been carved out from a single huge rock.

Kedareshwar : Just at the right-hand side of Harishchandreshwar Templ there is one huge cave is the cave of Kedareshwar., In the middle of cave there is a big Shivlinga surrounded by ice-cold water. There are four stone pillars around the Shivlinga, which are in damaged condition.

Konkan Kada

Konkan kada is a visual feast and is the heart of the Harishchandragad which has always challenged many rock climbers from many years. This cliff is not straight, but concave in its topmost approach. The length of it is near about k.m. with the height of 4000ft. You can see the high-class beauty of nature from here. It is one of the best spot for rapling. It has been accessed successfully by rock-climbers only twice in its history.

Taramati peak:

This is the topmost point on the fort. It is also known by Balekilla. From here we can have a glimpse of the whole range of Naneghat and the forts near Murbad. Leopards are seen in the forests beyond this peak
