Quonset Hut Just a note to update the family on a project. Recently, my wife and I were looking at a newspaper and found a free 36'x50' quonset. All we needed to do was to move it. We contacted vice chief John Dunnagan and we met and went to look at the building. It is in superior shape and we accepted the donation. Last week, John was diligently working on obtaining both state and local permits for installing plumbing and electricity to the 7 Pillars property where the quonset will be used. This week, we started the removal process. It is going smoothly so far. On Tuesday, October 17, John will be meeting with a gentleman who will test the property and let us know where we can plumb the property safely. With electricity and plumbing, we have an unlimited amount of activities that the membership can enjoy. Longhouse, weddings, workshops, meetings, and much more can be more thoroughly enjoyed with the amenities of water and electricity. And the natural beauty of the property can be enjoyed year round. I will inform you of the progress as we go.
Billie Creek Gathering What a weekend! Good people and good fun was the appropriate terms to use. The wind blew and was cold, but hot cocoa and a warm fire was just the ticket. The MNI gathering at Billie Creek was a success. The Mississinewa River Drum was amazing in how far they have come. The Black Thunder Drum was a truly enjoyable experience, as well. We had fairly good sales and many people came to listen, watch, and ask questions. If you are ever in the area of Indiana State Hwy 36W near Rockville, be sure to check the 150 acres that was donated to the Miami Nation of Indiana. Hopefully, next year, there will be a Miami gathering on the 150 acres. More to come about that at a later date.
160th. Anniversary of the Removal March Just a note to let you all know how the commemorative walk went in Peru. The 160th anniversary of the removal of the Myaamia was on October 7th in Peru. We walked down the streets of Peru to the depot near the river. Once we arrived, there was a pipe smoked in honor of the past. The Twigh Twee Drum was there and the singers played a couple of songs to honor the ones who were removed and the ones who died on the way. We gathered along the bridge and dropped flowers and Miami tobacco in the Wabash river in honor of our past. Seeing the red and yellow flowers float down the river gave such a solemn feeling of the past and everything we have lost. However, there was a feeling of great joy to know that in spite of governmental efforts, we are still here and still a people of great pride and joy. As long as we stay together and remember our ancestors and everything they did for us, we will always be a Nation of pride.
Museum Opening Aya Family! Just a note to let you know what a success the opening of the Wabash museum was! The tent with the Myaamia was right outside the museum with free access. The Bundy family drum was set up next to us and they represented the Tribe with honor and dignity. Many activities were there to be enjoyed by all. Crystal Gayle was there and sounded beautiful. The museum is most excellently done and we recommend spending the time and the gas to go down and visit. We were disappointed that more of the Turtle Clan didn't take the opportunity to come down and set out your craft and art goods. The people that did come and set up did very well in sales. The MNI Tribal complex sent informational posterboards and were available to discuss with the people many aspects of the Myaamia. We will be seeing you at the various MTC activities to come in the future. David
