From our first litter of smooths Joey seemed special from the start. Oh, if we had only known just how special he was to become.
Joey started his show career at the tender age of 6 months and 1 week. At the North Texas collie club and went Winners Dog under Marion Durholtz for a 3 point major. The next day Judie Evans was judging and 1 was extremely nervous as I greatly admired Judies dogs. Captivated by his beautiful face and charisma in the ring he walked away that day with Winners Dog , Best Opposite to the Variety, and Best Opposite to the Breed for a 5 point major. This is a win that thrills me more then any other and and there were many big wins to
follow. Thank you Judie for a beautiful memory of the Ft.Worth Collie Club Specialty in the fall 1988.
Joey and Frank Jewett
The following spring we went to Collie Club of America in Colorado Springs and he was handled to Reserve Winners Dog by Laurie Jeff Greer. Judging that day was Virginia Holtz. We floated home to Oklahoma. He finished shortly after the National and was put up to mature.
Starting his Specials career in the fall of 1989 he won several specialty and all-breed Best of Variety. With very limited showing in 1990-1993 he placed in the top 10 Hawkins system and in 1994 he was # 2 smooth overall and #1 smooth male ALL systems. In 1993 he was Best Opposite to Best of Variety at Collie Club of America in Kansas City under judge Qwen Means. He was also Best Smooth Stud Dog tinder Judge Jim Noe and his smooth son was Reserve Winners Dog CH. Sage Brush On The Mark. Also under judge Noe. In 1994 I went into Partnership with Jerry and Patty Fitzgerald and Frank Jewett and Joey went to Florida to have a real specials campaign. While under Franks guidance he made 75 trips to the group ring and was:
Group 1 - 21 times, Group 2 - 6 times, Group 3 11 times, and Group 4 9 times!! For a total of 49 group placements in 1 year, as well as 4 specialty Best of Varieties and an all breed Best in Show tinder Judge Janet Wilcox.
Best Smooth Stud Collie 1993 Guy Mauldin
Joey also was awarded the Ch. Tokalon Blue Banner Award as the top winning Blue Merle Collie in
1994.
Joey retired from the show ring after the National in 1995, shown at a few specialties from 1995-1999 he won several Best of Varieties and was 1'st in the 11 and over class at the CC of A National Specialty in 1999.
So to sum up his career he did all this during a time when smooths got little recognition in the breed or group ring. He ended his career with: 2 Specialty Best of Breeds, l All-Breed Best in Show, 138 Best of Varieties, 33 Best Opposite Sex, 27 Group l's, 8 Group 2's 1 Group 3's and 11 Group 4's. As a show dog he was always ready and gave his all. One Of those rare dogs that really didn't need a handler. You had but to take the lead to feel the electricity.
As a stud dog he produced 19 Champions and should get his ROM sometime this year. He lives on in the kids and grand kids here and around the U.S. and Japan.
As a companion he was a great dog who loved his people above all else and lived for them and the Show ring. He was truly a great dog with a great heart.
