And Then It Was My babies and I...
It was the end of March 2004, when I proudly showed my husband what I had brought home from my mothers. The four tiny little babies in a box with their eyes still closed. I immediately searched online for what I could find on caring for them, with little results other then 'leave them in the nest'.
I had picked up some KMR(kitten milk replacer) on the way home, and bedding and a syringe to feed them with. I remade a nest of rags and let them settle until evening.
Reading that a mother rabbit only feeds her kittens (baby rabbits) in the early morning and evening, I was set to feed them before I went to bed. I warmed up the premade canned formula and went to work....or at least I tried. Being used to momma only, having a syringe with some strange substance stuck in their mouth is no easy task for them to partake in.
After feeding each one, I rubbed their little bottoms with a warm wet cottonball to stimulate them to go poddy and put them all to bed.
Each morning and evening I would feed them, which became much easier after I discovered that an eyedropper worked much better, and they became use to being handled and fed in this manner.
Oh how wonderful it was to have 4 little babies sleeping in your hand. Everyday they seemed to grow so much!!! Their fur would be a little more fluffier, they would wobble around on those little legs, but with each day they were stronger and growing more beautiful like a little cottontail instead of little wiggle worms!
Dandelions, yum!!!!!!
All was going well so I thought, until a week later my husband woke up first and found one passed away. This was the beginning of my heart breaking with each and every one I lost over the next 6 months. About a week later, another baby passed away. I didnt know why, couldnt understand why, and every night I would kiss the two I had left and tell them how I loved them and beg them not to leave me as I put them back to bed.
This little guy would sit on top of the couch and look longingly out the window
