Happiness Is Measured Out In Miles
CHAPTER TWELVE
I started University straight after arriving from Paris. Edu came one day later and started looking for a job. We both were so busy that we hardly had time to update each other with the latest news. One day John phoned me when he knew I wasn’t at University and told me a taxi would come for me. I asked him why but he refused to letting me know anything, so I waited until the taxi came. The taxi took me to Abbey Road Studios, where John and the Beatles recorded all of his numbers, and there a limousine was waiting. I entered and John and Brian were inside.
John kissed me.
- "I’ve got a surprise for you, luv. Ok, let’s go!", the limo geared off and took us to a beautiful area of central London. Brian told me where we were going. There was this photographer, friend of the Beatles and who had also taken what would be the cover of their next album ,called Bob Freeman. He lived with his wife Sunny and their children in Kensington and knowing we were looking for a flat, he told Brian the flat under his own had become empty and so we could rent it. So, we were there. Bob and Sunny were there when we arrived and they were very nice. The flat was not a wonder. There were six flights of stairs up from the front door. I thought I would rather stay with Edu if the things were as they were with my roommates. But John held my hand and squeezed it when we saw the bedroom and the rest of the house. We would have to pay a rent. It was only 15 pounds a week. But that was Ok, John had money. In general there was a kitchen, a sitting room and two bedrooms, so I would more than once invite Edu to stay. So it was decided, we would move in as soon as possible.
When I told Edu we were both filled with mixed emotions. That would mean we would no longer live together and that was sad, but on the other hand it meant John loved me until the point of taking me to live with him. And John was becoming more and more famous every day. When they performed at the London Palladium, the crowd outside the place became crazy. And I couldn’t believe it! They were becoming as famous as Elvis or our favourite of all times Buddy Holly! The press called it Beatlemania, because all the girls outside the London Palladium were hysteric. Edu and I tried to keep a low profile. I had been found out that day but ever since, the press had stopped following me so I was good in the shadows. As was Edu.
One day just before moving in to Kensington, I saw the opportunity of introducing Paul to Eli. She had been all the time asking me when and when and when and one day I knew the Beatles were recording at Abbey Road, Edu, Eli and me took the tube to St. John’s Wood. Needless to say Tessa had remained in no good terms with me, so that was worse for her.
We were in the middle of moving in our new flat. The Beatles had a couple of days off before parting to Sweden, I think, and so it was decided that Edu, Eli and me would go to pay a little visit to Paul. Paul was living with Jane Asher and her family then. We three hated her, we thought she was really conceited, always appearing on television with her long red hair. Ahh! We didn’t like her at all. So, I invited Edu and Eli home on Monday evening. All three of us had things to do the next day, but we couldn’t care less. Eli was more than excited to meet Paul, or John for that matter. John had been sleeping almost the whole day. I woke him up when I heard the door bell. Those were Edu and Eli. So John went to the bathroom to have a shower and I opened the door.
- "Hi, girls, come in. Excuse the disorder, you see, but we still haven’t settled down properly."
- "Oh, that’s Ok, Vicky, where’s John?", asked Edu. I saw Eli open her eyes in amazement looking for him.
- "He’s in the bathroom, having a shower. Paul must be about to come", to name Paul was enough for Eli to speak.
- "Oh, Vicky, I still can’t believe that you’re dating a Beatle. And that I’m actually meeting Paul today!" I smiled. John came then from the bathroom, all clean and with his hair combed and Eli was about to faint. John dedicated her the best of his smiles and kissed her on the cheek.
- "Hi, luv! How are you?", Eli blushed. John smiled and went to Edu. He kissed her on the cheek too but Edu didn’t blush. She knew more of John than most people. Then Edu said:
- "Ok, it’s time for me to go. I’ve got to see my George. Say hi for me to Paul, will you? Ok, John, good luck with your tour and see you soon"
- "Hope so, luv", then they kissed again (wasn’t it a little bit excessive) and said their goodbyes.
John had ordered dinner in a restaurant and we would have it delivered home, but Paul was being really late. Eli was becoming a little bit sad thinking that Paul would not turn up but then we heard the door bell ring and John opened.
- "You’re bloody late, Macca!", I heard him say. Eli started getting very nervous and we finally saw Paul McCartney walk in. I had always thought he was really cute and really sexy. John never knew anything about this but that was reality and that day he definitely was. He was also clean and with his lovable mop top washed and combed. Eli was in a state of anxiety that I thought she would explode so I decided to go directly to the point.
- "Paul, let me introduce to you to my friend Eli. Eli, this is Paul, although I’m afraid you already know who he is..." I stopped short and looked at John. He was thinking the same as me. Paul was a womaniser, everybody knew that, but the way he was looking at Eli was not the same he would look at John. After a couple of seconds, Eli and Paul were really deep into each other’s eyes. Oh, no! Why on earth did Paul have to have a crush on ALL my friends?
- "Uau!! Luv, pleased to meet you!", he kissed her on the cheek. Needless to say she was very much overwhelmed and she also seemed to be enjoying Paul’s company very much.
The dinner went on nicely. I looked with the corner of my eye at Eli every now and then and she looked back at me like thanking me. Paul and her had really got on well. John and Paul talked about their upcoming tour for Sweden and the songs they were going to sing, etc. When Eli and I were bored out of our minds, I had to stop them.
John was in front of me and blew me a kiss. Paul looked at Eli and said:
- "Ok, luv, what do you fancy doing now?"
Eli had by then recovered a little bit her self and was able to answer:
- "Whatever you like!", I saw John hide a laughter. We girls could be really devoted to this four lovable lads. Suddenly Paul got up and offered a hand to Eli.
- "Right then", he said, "let me take you away from here". Eli couldn’t believe it. Her dream had just come true. There she was, with Paul McCartney. They were going somewhere together. I looked at John and he shrugged.
So, after saying their goodbyes, Eli directed me one final look and off they went. I looked at John.
- "Do you think it will last?" He shrugged again.
- "I don’t know yet, luv. Paul has just met her. I’ll try to talk to him tomorrow or on our way to Sweden and then I’ll see". He smiled at me. And I knew what that smile meant. We both wanted to make love, we were really really excited about it. The wine had really made us horny. On my way to the bedroom I was praying internally because I wanted the story between Paul and Eli to work out.
- "What do you think?", John asked me. I kissed him.
- "Why does Paul always like all of my friends?" John laughed.
- "Paul, Paul... Macca is... You see, luv, young and carefree, so to speak. Ah, don't think about it, luv. Come here!"
He took me in his arms and like he usually did, started kissing me everywhere, softly, showering me in little kisses all over my body. But somehow that night I was not in the mood. I don’t know, I couldn’t stop thinking that Paul always liked all my friends. Now it was Eli, first it had been Edu. Who will be next? I suddenly heard John say:
- "What’s wrong with you today, luv?", he had stopped kissing me and was looking at me straight into my eyes. I looked at him.
- "Please, John, say you love me. Do you love me?", he smiled at me.
- "I love you, hon. What’s the matter?" I sat on his lap.
- "I don’t know. Do you think I’m pretty? What do you think of me, John? I feel sad..." I was really on the verge of tears at that point. I loved John madly, but still I couldn’t stop thinking that Paul had never ever told me anything lovely. John took my face between his hands.
- "Hey, luv! You’re beautiful and I love you very very much. What’s wrong with you today? Is something worrying you?", I tried to force a smile. I didn’t want to worry him. We only had a couple of days to be together before the Beatles went on tour to Sweden and I didn’t want to spoil it. So I kissed John and I finally relaxed and let John make love to me.
The next day I skipped classes to be with John. They were going the next day and I wanted to be with him as much time as possible. We woke up together and I turned to kiss him. He kissed me back but I felt John was a little bit uncomfortable.
- "Mornin’, John", I told him He kissed me.
- "Mornin’ my love! What do you want us to do today?"
Well, I wanted to go out but I knew that was impossible by then. It had reached a point when the Beatles could not walk out freely through the streets without being recognised and mobbed. And Thank God the fans hadn’t discovered Edu and me yet, otherwise that would have been hell for us. So I decided to spend the day together with John, Edu and George.
I went to the bathroom and had a shower. When I went out, John walked in and meanwhile I prepared breakfast, John had another shower. We were finally together in the kitchen having breakfast. The paper boy had delivered the papers like every morning and John had gone to fetch it. He was having a look at it when he finally shouted:
- "Bloody hell!" I looked at him in amazement.
- "What’s wrong?" He looked at me and looked for my hand. He took it and squeezed it.
- "Vicky, please, don’t get angry, Ok? I must talk to you!"
Immediately my heart started beating incredibly fast. My heartbeats should be heard even in Spain. He went on:
- "I talked to Cynthia the other day", and now my heart stopped. I could feel the blood run out my face. I started to panic. He’s talked to her, why? Because he wants to go back to her. Oh, no! God! What am I gonna do now? No, please, that can not be. John saw my white like paper face and squeezed my hand a little bit stronger. "Hey, don’t worry, luv. I just wanted to ask her if she had the papers of the divorce ready. You know, I want to be with you, marry you, be completely united to you.", I was born anew. The colour went back to my face and my heart beat again. "But, luv, here’s where the bad news come. She won’t sign the papers, luv. And what’s worse... She’s told everything to the papers", he threw the paper on the table so that I could see it. In big capital letters on the front page there was this big headline: JOHN LENNON DUMPED ME FOR A SPANIARD. I could see what Cynthia wanted with this. She wanted all their English fans to hate me for taking John away from them. But John wasn’t their property! And I loved John and John loved me, that was what mattered. I looked at John. He went on: "I’ll talk to Brian, luv. He’ll see what he can do". I looked at him.
- "John, don’t worry about that. I love you, and I don’t mind the press. I only mind you".
- "Yes, but now the press is gonna be chasing you and it’s gonna be hell for you, luv. It must be a way to stop it before it gets out of hand".
John was right, but there was nothing we could do that particular day, so we called a taxi to go to my old flat to go for Edu and then to the hotel where Ringo and George were still living. But when we arrived at Edu’s flat, George was already there. The scene that welcomed us was lovely: George was sat down on the floor and Edu was sat down in front of him but in the same exact position, so that she was playing George’s guitar while he masterfully taught her with his own hands. More amazingly enough, Tessa was sitting on the sofa watching them play and laughing. So when we entered, Edu gave us a smile and George said hello, but Tessa got up from the sofa and came to us. She had a broad smile plastered on her face. At first, when she saw John, her face changed to amazement and then she started to smile broadly. Oh, very good! She hasn’t spoken to me for ages and now she comes and now she sees John and comes to us with a smile. Thank God I had told John everything, the way she had reacted when she found out through the papers. She soon was in front of us but wouldn’t look at me, no, she was looking John directly in the eye. John smiled at her and she was to kiss him, but John looked at me and decided it was better not to. Edu realised at that very moment what was going on and she suddenly jumped from the floor with George and came to me. She grabbed me by the arm and took me away from them. I looked at John and shrugged.
- "Be careful with her, Vicky", she told me. "She told us before John was her favourite".
My face tightened. That meant danger. I looked at them with the corner of my eye and saw John going to George but Tessa trailing in. Oh, no! It was much trouble to worry about the fans that now I had one of them here living with my best friend.
- "Ok, thanks, dear. I’ll kill her if she ever dares to say or do anything to John". She smiled.
- "Well, what about last night? How did the night finish?"
- "Hasn’t Eli told you anything?"
- "Eli? I haven’t seen her in the whole day! I thought you knew where she was"
That made me think. Eli was with Paul, I was sure about that. Well, I was glad in a way because Eli was a really nice girl, but I had to laugh at the thought of a not very happy Jane Asher. Edu went on:
- "Paul?", she had guessed alright. I nodded and she smiled. "This Paulie, he’s such a flirt. He can’t resist any girl". Well, I had something to say at that respect, he had never ever told me anything.
Anyway I tried not to think much about that and decided to go out the four of us together to have dinner. Tessa was really trying her best so as to keep John home and I was getting really fed up with her. John wasn’t really taking much notice of her but I still saw her as danger and wanted to go out as soon as possible.
The restaurant where George and John took us was really nice, all full of posh and elegant people. John and George were really excited because the next day they would embark on their first foreign tour. They were going to Sweden. I couldn’t be more jealous.
- "I’m gonna miss you, John. Behave yourself", I did that quite seriously but everybody laughed. "Well? I mean it"
- "I’ll take care of him, don’t worry, Vicky", George told me.
- "And how long will you stay away?", said Edu. That was a good question. Now I lived apart from my friends and quite far from my own family who were still living in Spain. I lived with John but if John wasn't there, it really wasn't worthy. George looked at Edu.
- "Ten or eleven days. I’ll phone you when I know for sure and so you can come to the airport".
We smiled and accepted. Then the conversation diverted to several other topics. John told George about this new group the rolling Stones and the pub they used to go, the Crawdaddy or something like that. They got a number one I think with the songs John and Paul had written for them.
- "Let’s see how the one for Ringo works out", John said.
- "Ringo has the same song?", I asked. John looked at me and smiled one of those beautiful smiles he had.
- "Yes, luv. I think it’s interesting so people can compare". Well, that was their business. Then Edu told them something that we had both been talking about for ages.
- "You’re getting more famous than Buddy Holly and his Crickets". John smiled and George laughed.
- "Luv", George said, "you should have seen us on tour with Roy Orbison. We had to change the order of the gigs ‘cos people were actually there expecting to see us".
- "Really?", I said in surprise. Up until that moment I had never thought the Beatles were as famous as they actually were. I suppose from the inner circle, things were seen differently. They all smiled.
Soon it was time to go. Not only did the Beatles have to be up early, but I also had to go to university so I said goodbye to George (I would go with Edu the next day) and John and I went back home.
The next day John woke up early. I was still in bed when he, thinking I would probably be sleeping, kissed me softly on my forefront and whispered a goodbye to me in my ear. I couldn’t let him go like that so I woke up in a sudden jump and hugged him:
- "Oh, John... I’m gonna miss you like hell! Remember that I love you", I said in the verge of tears. John forced a weak smile.
- "I’m gonna miss you too, luv. And I love you too", he kissed me again. I held him tight for a couple of minutes but then John said: "I really must be going, luv. I’ll phone you to see how you’re doing", then he walked away from me. I observed him while he went to the door. When he was about to open the door to go out, he turned to me and after staring at me for a couple of seconds, he muttered: "Bloody Hell, I hate to leave you!", the he walked towards me again and kissed me passionately. When he separated from me he said: "I’ll be thinking of you night and day, and I’ll to do my best to have you with me on tour as soon as I am able". Then he kissed me again and this time he went away.
I couldn’t help it, but I cried. To think that I wouldn’t see John for the rest of the month made me incredibly sad. Well, Edu was in the same situation as I was, and probably Eli, who knows? That kept me going, I had to find out what had happened to Paul and Edu the night of the dinner.
After University I went to my old flat. Tessa wasn’t there but Eli and Edu were. I smiled at both of them. Eli was particularly happy, and I could guess why. EDU was happy too, so I had to find out what was going on.
- "What’s the matter with you two? I think I’m missing something", they both giggled. "OK, let’s start with the trivial things. Edu, tell me!" Edu kept on smiling and said:
- "I’ve found a job! I’m going to work for the local library from Monday to Friday. And the salary is quite good!", we three started jumping up and down. I was really happy for her. She went on: "Yes, but I think what Eli has to tell us will steal this’ thunder!" I already knew what she had to say. So I spoke before she did:
- "Did you and Paul...?", for a couple of seconds nobody said anything but then Eli couldn’t wait any more and said ecstatically:
- "YES!!!!"
- "Oh, God! Eli... I... I mean, I’m glad for you, you see, yeah, but... Paul... Jane..." Eli’s face changed immediately.
- "I feel sorry for that Jane Asher, you see"
- "What do you mean?"
- "Well, I wouldn’t be very happy if I found out Paul is telling any other girl the things he told me the other day". I couldn’t understand what was going on between Paul and that Jane Asher whom I still didn’t know. Eli continued talking: "The way Paul told me the things he did was not the way an engaged guy would". I was starting to see the light. Well, they had only known each other for a couple of days, the things could not be that serious. We’d have to let the time go by.
- "Ok, I’m glad for you!", that’s the only thing I could say.
- "Have you realised", said Edu, "that three out of the four Beatles are dating Spanish girls?", I had never thought of that but it was true indeed. I smiled to myself. Now I could understand Tessa in a way, she had reasons for being so angry. But on the other hand, Tessa... John was her favourite, wasn’t he? But John was mine!! Edu turned me to reality: "What are you thinking, Vicky?" I told them:
- "Where’s Tessa?" Edu turned her face doing a funny one.
- "I don’t know, but we’d better be careful with her", then she looked at Eli. She had known Tessa for longer than us.
- "I’ll keep an eye on her", Eli said looking at me, "after all I owe you a favour". I smiled at her. Well, of course she did. Paul and Eli’s destiny had been fixed thanks to me. And Edu’s and George’s too. I had to know a few more facts, anyway.
- "Well", I said, "and how did you end the night? I mean, did he ask for your phone number or something?"
- "Oh, yes, he did. I gave it to him. He said he would be in touch, maybe even from Sweden. Oh, I can’t believe it. My dream has come true! Thank you, thank you, thank you!". I was glad, but little did we know how things were going to change, for Eli and for me in the next few years.
