Happiness Is Measured Out In Miles

CHAPTER TWELVE

I started University straight after arriving from Paris. Edu came one day later and started looking for a job. We both were so busy that we hardly had time to update each other with the latest news. One day John phoned me when he knew I wasn’t at University and told me a taxi would come for me. I asked him why but he refused to letting me know anything, so I waited until the taxi came. The taxi took me to Abbey Road Studios, where John and the Beatles recorded all of his numbers, and there a limousine was waiting. I entered and John and Brian were inside.

John kissed me.

When I told Edu we were both filled with mixed emotions. That would mean we would no longer live together and that was sad, but on the other hand it meant John loved me until the point of taking me to live with him. And John was becoming more and more famous every day. When they performed at the London Palladium, the crowd outside the place became crazy. And I couldn’t believe it! They were becoming as famous as Elvis or our favourite of all times Buddy Holly! The press called it Beatlemania, because all the girls outside the London Palladium were hysteric. Edu and I tried to keep a low profile. I had been found out that day but ever since, the press had stopped following me so I was good in the shadows. As was Edu.

One day just before moving in to Kensington, I saw the opportunity of introducing Paul to Eli. She had been all the time asking me when and when and when and one day I knew the Beatles were recording at Abbey Road, Edu, Eli and me took the tube to St. John’s Wood. Needless to say Tessa had remained in no good terms with me, so that was worse for her.

We were in the middle of moving in our new flat. The Beatles had a couple of days off before parting to Sweden, I think, and so it was decided that Edu, Eli and me would go to pay a little visit to Paul. Paul was living with Jane Asher and her family then. We three hated her, we thought she was really conceited, always appearing on television with her long red hair. Ahh! We didn’t like her at all. So, I invited Edu and Eli home on Monday evening. All three of us had things to do the next day, but we couldn’t care less. Eli was more than excited to meet Paul, or John for that matter. John had been sleeping almost the whole day. I woke him up when I heard the door bell. Those were Edu and Eli. So John went to the bathroom to have a shower and I opened the door.

John had ordered dinner in a restaurant and we would have it delivered home, but Paul was being really late. Eli was becoming a little bit sad thinking that Paul would not turn up but then we heard the door bell ring and John opened.

The dinner went on nicely. I looked with the corner of my eye at Eli every now and then and she looked back at me like thanking me. Paul and her had really got on well. John and Paul talked about their upcoming tour for Sweden and the songs they were going to sing, etc. When Eli and I were bored out of our minds, I had to stop them.

John was in front of me and blew me a kiss. Paul looked at Eli and said:

Eli had by then recovered a little bit her self and was able to answer:

So, after saying their goodbyes, Eli directed me one final look and off they went. I looked at John.

He took me in his arms and like he usually did, started kissing me everywhere, softly, showering me in little kisses all over my body. But somehow that night I was not in the mood. I don’t know, I couldn’t stop thinking that Paul always liked all my friends. Now it was Eli, first it had been Edu. Who will be next? I suddenly heard John say:

The next day I skipped classes to be with John. They were going the next day and I wanted to be with him as much time as possible. We woke up together and I turned to kiss him. He kissed me back but I felt John was a little bit uncomfortable.

Well, I wanted to go out but I knew that was impossible by then. It had reached a point when the Beatles could not walk out freely through the streets without being recognised and mobbed. And Thank God the fans hadn’t discovered Edu and me yet, otherwise that would have been hell for us. So I decided to spend the day together with John, Edu and George.

I went to the bathroom and had a shower. When I went out, John walked in and meanwhile I prepared breakfast, John had another shower. We were finally together in the kitchen having breakfast. The paper boy had delivered the papers like every morning and John had gone to fetch it. He was having a look at it when he finally shouted:

Immediately my heart started beating incredibly fast. My heartbeats should be heard even in Spain. He went on:

John was right, but there was nothing we could do that particular day, so we called a taxi to go to my old flat to go for Edu and then to the hotel where Ringo and George were still living. But when we arrived at Edu’s flat, George was already there. The scene that welcomed us was lovely: George was sat down on the floor and Edu was sat down in front of him but in the same exact position, so that she was playing George’s guitar while he masterfully taught her with his own hands. More amazingly enough, Tessa was sitting on the sofa watching them play and laughing. So when we entered, Edu gave us a smile and George said hello, but Tessa got up from the sofa and came to us. She had a broad smile plastered on her face. At first, when she saw John, her face changed to amazement and then she started to smile broadly. Oh, very good! She hasn’t spoken to me for ages and now she comes and now she sees John and comes to us with a smile. Thank God I had told John everything, the way she had reacted when she found out through the papers. She soon was in front of us but wouldn’t look at me, no, she was looking John directly in the eye. John smiled at her and she was to kiss him, but John looked at me and decided it was better not to. Edu realised at that very moment what was going on and she suddenly jumped from the floor with George and came to me. She grabbed me by the arm and took me away from them. I looked at John and shrugged.

My face tightened. That meant danger. I looked at them with the corner of my eye and saw John going to George but Tessa trailing in. Oh, no! It was much trouble to worry about the fans that now I had one of them here living with my best friend.

That made me think. Eli was with Paul, I was sure about that. Well, I was glad in a way because Eli was a really nice girl, but I had to laugh at the thought of a not very happy Jane Asher. Edu went on:

Anyway I tried not to think much about that and decided to go out the four of us together to have dinner. Tessa was really trying her best so as to keep John home and I was getting really fed up with her. John wasn’t really taking much notice of her but I still saw her as danger and wanted to go out as soon as possible.

The restaurant where George and John took us was really nice, all full of posh and elegant people. John and George were really excited because the next day they would embark on their first foreign tour. They were going to Sweden. I couldn’t be more jealous.

We smiled and accepted. Then the conversation diverted to several other topics. John told George about this new group the rolling Stones and the pub they used to go, the Crawdaddy or something like that. They got a number one I think with the songs John and Paul had written for them.

Soon it was time to go. Not only did the Beatles have to be up early, but I also had to go to university so I said goodbye to George (I would go with Edu the next day) and John and I went back home.

The next day John woke up early. I was still in bed when he, thinking I would probably be sleeping, kissed me softly on my forefront and whispered a goodbye to me in my ear. I couldn’t let him go like that so I woke up in a sudden jump and hugged him:

I couldn’t help it, but I cried. To think that I wouldn’t see John for the rest of the month made me incredibly sad. Well, Edu was in the same situation as I was, and probably Eli, who knows? That kept me going, I had to find out what had happened to Paul and Edu the night of the dinner.

After University I went to my old flat. Tessa wasn’t there but Eli and Edu were. I smiled at both of them. Eli was particularly happy, and I could guess why. EDU was happy too, so I had to find out what was going on.
