Happiness is Measured out in Miles.
CHAPTER ONE
My baby says she’s travelling on the one after nine oh nine
I said move over honey I’m travelling on that line...
When Edu and I starting writing to each other, little did we know what the future had in store for us. How could we have imagined that we would meet the guys that less than a year after meeting them would take the whole world by storm? Moreover, we could have never imagined that we would be part of history and that we would inspired most of the songs these amazing guys would write and that would become instant hits.
And this is how it was. Edu saw an advertising of mine in a musical magazine we both were buying in those days and where we were updated with the latest musical news. I wrote to the magazine saying I wanted to keep in touch with other music lovers and surprisingly, one day, I received a letter from her.
We became instant friends. She was from Barcelona, in the north of Spain, and I was from Valencia, in the east, but even so we knew that some day we would meet in the flesh.
Our letters were full of our musical tastes. We both loved Buddy Holly. I personally thought his songs were amazing, full of feeling, and I also thought he had a sexy voice. I had always dreamt of someone in love with me singing them softly in my ear. I loved "Words of Love", for instance. Ah! It should be so romantic to have someone sing that song to you... Elvis was also one of our favourites. I particularly found him incredibly sexy. My parents used to forgive me see him on the television because of his swinging hips. And I went to the record stores to see if any had a television and so see him.
Our letters came and went for a period of a year and a half. We started writing each other in 1962 and by the beginning of 1963 Edu gave me a lovely surprise. She told me she had some days off at Easter and that she was going to Torremolinos for a short vacation. She wrote me a quick letter letting me know of her plans:
My lovely Vicky,
I think this is it, the perfect time to meet each other in the flesh. I’ve got some days off at school at Easter and I’m going to Torremolinos on my own. Don’t you think it would be a good idea if you took some days off too and meet me down there? We could talk about music and have some fun together. What do you say? Please, write me back as soon as possible, as I must know your answer before April.
Love, Edu.
I thought it was perfect. Easter was a long holiday at college and I wouldn’t mind losing a few days if the reason was this lovely. I was studying English at University. I was in my third year, and since I hadn’t failed any of my subjects from previous years, I was only 20 years old. Edu was 19. So, I made up my mind and wrote back to Edu telling her I was going to Torremolinos too. I wrote a telegram with my phone number and at the beginning of April I received a phone call from her.
I had to admit the idea was quite tempting. EDU and I alone having some fun away from the watchful eyes of my parents, getting some refreshing energies to go back to school and face the upcoming exams.
Then she told me. She was travelling on Friday the 26th, so I’d do the same. I was travelling by train, so the best thing we could do was meeting at the station at, say, 10.00 p.m.?
We hung up. And as soon as I started rummaging the idea, I started to get really excited about the trip. I went to the travel’s agency and got the tickets for the train. We were only going to stay for a few days, so I left the return ticket open so I could choose the exact day of my returning.
I also went shopping. I loved going shopping, especially for clothes. I bought everything new: skirts, tops, high boots, jeans, trousers, long skirts... I also wanted to buy some music. After all, music was what had brought Edu and me together, so I imagined we could spend some time listening to the hits of the moment. I almost had to ask my parents for some extra money! But it was going to be worthy. I knew it!
So, as the day of my exciting trip came nearer, more excited I felt. Strange thoughts came also to my head. I trusted Edu, and knew she wouldn’t let me down, but even so I started thinking what would happen if she finally didn’t turn up at the station. I would find myself alone in a strange place. Oh, I’d better not think that!
My parents didn’t like the idea at all. They were worried for my welfare and they were also worried because they thought I was dropping out of school. I spent a lot of time trying to convince them that it was only going to be a short vacation and that I would be back in less than two weeks (lie! I didn’t know when I was coming back, actually. The only thing I did know was that I wanted to take all my final exams). That made them happier.
And finally, Friday the 26 arrived. I was so excited that I almost dropped getting out of bed. I took a shower singing one of my favourites, "Hit the Road, Jack", as that summed up exactly what I was going to do. Then I made up a little bit, grabbed my bags and said my farewell to my parents.
When I arrived at the station, I decided to buy a couple of magazines to read on the train. They were going to be musical magazines, of course. After all, music was my life. When I was already comfortably seated on the train, and it started moving, I had a look at them.
They showed the musical news of the moment. They were quite Spanish, but there were some sections of American and British music. I always went for that, I wasn’t very interested in Spanish music, it didn’t sound right to me. But American and, especially, British music, made me feel special. They were usually full of the latest news about Cliff Richards and the Shadows, who I didn’t like at all.
But that day there was a particular news that drew my attention. It was about a British group with a name of an insect. The Beatles. I had to laugh. Edu is going to laugh with me when she hears about this. The Beatles... My goodness, couldn’t they think of any other name?. I read the article. They seemed to be quite famous in England. The little article said all the girls went bonkers when they watched them in concert. Ah, come off it! It can be that crazy. They had some singles in the musical market. I hadn’t heard any of them, so maybe, if they were so good that all the girls went crazy, I had to buy them. The article enclosed a little picture. The group was formed by four guys with a strange hairstyle. They had their hair combed it downwards on their forefronts, with sort of a fringe. And they had it longer than usual at the back, at least, longer than the rest of groups I could have possible seen. How strange, but boy do they look gorgeous! Their clothes were very nice, and they looked quite smart in them. Definitely, I had to buy something by this group. Maybe Edu knew something else about them.
I moved to the rest of the articles. But they weren’t so interesting as the previous one, so I closed the magazine and decided to look out of the window.
Thankfully, I was alone in my department, which it’s perfect by me. I don’t like being watched by someone sitting in front of you. So, I started watching the blue Spanish sky and the sunny day, and the lyrics to "Words of Love" came to my head:
Hold me close and tell me how you feel ah
Tell me love is real...ah
MMMMMMM
Word of love you whisper soft and true
Darling I love you
Mmmmmmmm!
Oh, How I loved that song! The sun filtering through the window pane, and the love song in my head, made me drift to a sweet slumber.
It woke me up someone shaking me:
I woke up in a sudden jump and looked out of the window. There were lots of people on the platform but I couldn’t see if it was day or night, as the station was covered by a high ceiling. I looked at my watch and saw it was 9.30 p.m. Well, too soon for Edu be waiting me. I stepped out of the train and went directly to a little café to clear up my mind.
At 10.00 I went out of the café and started looking for Edu. We hadn’t sent any pictures of ourselves to each other, so it was going to be quite difficult to recognise each other. I looked like frenzy for about five minutes when I happened to notice a very pretty girl all surrounded by bags standing in front of the toilets door. Will that be Edu? Shall I ask? Oh, come on, Vicky! If you don’t ask her, you’ll never know! And it’s getting dark, so you’d better move your ass and introduce yourself!.
I went towards her and quite softly I asked her:
That’s what we did. We asked at the station and someone directed us towards a very nice hotel, a little bit expensive, but it was worthy. We wanted our rooms together, so we would share the bill. We took a taxi and hopefully there were empty rooms when we got there. We were lucky, there were available rooms.
As soon as we had the keys in our hands, we went up to our room. The first thing we did when we opened the door was jumping to the bed and start hopping like frenzy, shouting that we were finally together.
I thought that was a perfect idea, so I took a shower still thinking of the news of this Beatles and when I went out, Edu had already ordered the dinner. How lovely of her! After eating our meal, we went straight to bed yet unaware of what the future had in store for us.
