Happiness Is Measured Out In Miles
CHAPTER TWO
I remember the first time
I was lonely without him
Can’t stop thinking about him now...
We woke up both at the same time to a knock on our door. I opened my eyes to hear Edu say:
- "There’s somebody knocking on the door!"
We both waited in our beds until we finally heard another knock. Who on Earth could that be at 9.30 in the morning?
I opened the door only to find the cleaning lady asking if she could enter the room. OH, God! And we were waken up in our sleep only to be said that... I couldn’t go back to sleep so I asked Edu if she wanted to go to have breakfast and then to spend the day out. She agreed and we both get dressed, quite casually as the day was going to be spent walking and window shopping and chatting, and went downstairs to have breakfast.
That day was spent in getting each other better. I told her about my family, my tastes, my studies... She did the same. We were both quite similar, either in that or in the heart affairs. We both had been refused by the guys we loved, something that had hurt us a lot in the past, but that we now laughed at. We swore that we never again would go back to the same old line. Would we like to meet anyone special and start a relationship? That was not our first need but if it happened, we would put up with it.
We both loved guys with personality, strong guys. Edu also liked romantic guys. Who don’t? But I loved the guys who could be very aggressive on the surface, but quite tender when deep in love. I told her about my fantasy of having someone singing "Words of love" right into my ear. She laughed at that.
- "I guess I’d also like that".
- "And do you remember anything else that friend of yours told you about this British group called the Beatles?"
- "Oh, you seem quite interested in them, don’t you?"
- "Well, it’s just that the name sounds funny and I love this kind of puns, you see".
- "Let me see... Well, I think they took the name on the beat music and the beetles, I guess... This friend of mine went to the north of England, Liverpool, and read something on the local newspaper, but she told me it was written in a strange language and that she could hardly make out a word!"
- "Would you like to go and see if we can find anything by them?"
"I’d love to, great idea!"
And so we did. We entered every music store we could find and we had no success. We were about to drop out when we saw one tiny little place that we found interesting. The place was so small, that there was no way we could roam freely scanning the records, we had to ask the guy behind the counter directly. We didn’t think we were going to succeed but even so, I asked the guy:
- "Excuse me, would you be so kind of telling me if you have something about this English group called the Beatles?", I expected the face of the guy to turn into a strange one, as in a puzzled look, but no. Much to my surprise, the guy went directly to a drowse behind him, opened it and handed me a record with these four guys over a yellow background. It said "Love me do". I was so surprised that I didn’t realised the guy was talking to me.
- "Yeah, quite strange, eh? Well, I love to have things ordered from England. This shop is entirely specialised in English products, music, books, everything you want to find from the British Isles. This is the group’s first single. Are you having it?"
I looked at Edu. She nodded and so I purchased it. We went out the shop still in awe and Edu told me:
- "Why don’t we go somewhere to play it, Vicky? I’m dying to hear it!"
- "Yeah, likewise, Edu, but where can we go?"
- "Maybe to a coffee bar! They usually have jukeboxes there. Let’s find one!"
We entered lots of bars, just like we had done with music stores, until we found one with plenty of space and a jukebox. There was no way we could go all free and play the single in our own, we had to ask the owner. A pretty waitress approached us:
- "What will you have?"
- "I’ll have a Coke, Edu?"
- "The same", she said. Then the waitress turned on her back to us and starting heading towards the bar, but before she could reach the counter, Edu stopped her. "Hey! Wait a minute, please!", the waitress turned to us again and asked us with her look. Edu went on: "Could we please have this record played on the jukebox? We’ve just bought it and we have no place to play it. Would you be so kind...?"
- "I’ll ask my father", she said. Edu looked at me and shuddered. In a couple of minutes, the waitress came back with our order and told us: "Yes, can I have the record, then?"
- "Of course!", said Edu handing the record to her. She went away towards the jukebox and played it. OH, my goodness!! What we heard still sends tickles to my spine. As soon as the sound of an harmonica came out of the jukebox, Edu and I both became speechless. The harmonica made the song special, but then came the words.
Love love me do
You know I love you
I’ll always be true
So please, love me do...
- "Oh, Edu!! I think this has replaced "Words of love" as my favourite"!
Edu was listening carefully and so I paid attention to the refrain.
Someone to love
Somebody new
Someone to love
Someone like you.
When the song ended, Edu and I looked at each other.
- "Now I know why all the girls go crazy at them", I said.
- "Yeah, they sound quite right, and look at the sleeve, Vicky. Aren’t they gorgeous?!"
Oh, yes, they were. They didn’t look English at all. I had met a couple of English guys at university and they were quite blond and full of freckles. The waitress came to give us the record back and we paid at the same time. We had had enough emotions for the day, we went back to think about this new group I had just discovered.
We had dinner in the hotel and as we had spent the whole day out, spending a lot of money on whims, we decided not to go out either that night. Maybe in the following days, so we went back to our rooms to sleep.
The next morning, without cleaning ladies waking us up and without any noises coming out from outside, as it was a Sunday, we slept until quite late. I woke up in a sudden jump because I was dreaming I was late for an exam. When I realised where I was and which day it was, I looked at my watch. Oh, God, it’s two o’clock! We’ve lost the breakfast and the lunch already!
- "Edu, Edu!! Wake up! It’s quite late!"
She turned a little bit in the bed and looked at me.
- "What time it is?"
- "It’s 2 o’clock!"
- "My goodness!! We’re late for lunch!"
We got up like mad from the bed and rushed towards the bathroom at the same time. We had no time to lose, so this time, we decided to share it. While one was having a shower, the other was washing her hair in the sink. In less than half an hour, we were both done.
- "Hurry up! Hurry up!", she said, We closed the door noisily and rushed downstairs to see if we still arrived on time for lunch. We were in such a hurry that I didn’t realised that, going past reception, I bumped into someone and dropped the handbag this person was carrying.
- "WHAT THE BLOODY HELL...??!!!, this person shouted.
I looked to see who this person could be and to apologise for being so naughty. Then we both turned at the same time and I became face to face to a very familiar person.
- "I’m sorry, I’m really sorry.. I", I muttered while looking at this guy deep in the eye. Why is he so familiar to me? And this strange way of dressing? The guy was wearing a velvet cap and a suit. I thought he was quite good-looking. At his side was another guy, older, taller and in some way, smarter. The angry expression of the guy turned into a smile when he saw me.
- "Oh, it’s nothing, luv!"
- "Let me help you pick up your things!", Edu was by my side and offered to help too, but the guy refused.
- "No, way, hon. It’s my fault for being on your way", he smiled at me and I suddenly felt weak in the knee. What on earth are you doing, Vicky? It’s the first guy you’ve met since you’re here, and now you’re feeling stupid.
- "Thank you"; I said. The guy kept looking at me, but then, the man who was with him, told him:
- "Come on, John, we’ve got the key!"
- "It’s been a pleasure bumping to you, luv", he said, and then turned and walked away. I followed him with my eyes until they entered the lifts and the doors closed.
- "Edu, I’ve seen that face before, I’m sure!"
- "Yeah, it’s familiar to me as well", we started to walk towards the dining-room, now thinking more of where we could have met this guy before than of the lunch. Then Edu suddenly grabbed my arm and shouted:
- "Vicky!! The record!! Have you got it here?"
- "No, it’s in our room".
- "The magazine, then, have you got it here?"
- "Neither, why? What’s up?"
- "Come on, let’s go! Quickly, I think I know where we’ve seen this guy before!"
She started running towards the lifts again and we went up to our rooms. We had already lost the lunch too. She opened the door and started looking for the record like mad. When she found it, she showed it to me.
- "Look here, Vicky! This is the guy we’ve just seen downstairs, it’s him!!!"
I looked at the record. Oh, God! Edu was right, it was him!
- "But, how...? I mean, what is he doing here? Are you sure? Can it be someone who looks very muck like him?"
- "Vicky, don’t be soft. Did you hear his accent? Wasn’t it English?"
Yes, it was. It was him, the guy who sang "Love me do"! I couldn’t believe it. What was he doing here? Oh, Jesus Christ!! One of the members of the group was here in the same hotel as we were!!
- "And so, Edu, what shall we do now?"
- "Do? What do you mean, Vicky? There’s nothing we should do, now. Just let him be. Don’t go after him or nothing. If he’s here is because he needs relaxation and peace".
- "Alright, then. Let’s find somewhere nice to have lunch!"
We went downstairs again and found a very cheap but at the same time nice restaurant. We ordered some typical Spanish meals and ate avidly, since we were starving at not having eaten anything since last night. Among bites of my meal, I looked at Edu. I was wondering if I should tell her about this guy. I don’t know why, but he had drown my attention. He was wearing a velvet cap and a suit and had the hair longer than usual, longer even than his own hairstyle from the single we had bought the day before. Edu realised my puzzled face and told me:
- "Ok, shoot it!"
- "What?"
- "You’re thinking something, I know. Just tell me what it is!"
- "Well, I was thinking that, well... Don’t you think he was dressed really strangely?"
- "No, don’t think so! Bob Dylan also wears that sort of cap. He may have copied it from him, who knows?"
- "Oh, Edu, don’t you think he’s gorgeous??!"
- "Get on, Vicky! He was really nice, yes, but forget him, there’s nothing else you can do."
Well, I didn’t agree on that but anyway, I let it be. After we had finished lunch we went outside the restaurant to relax in the sun. We decided to go to a terrace in a café to have some cold drinks. The afternoon sun was piercing our skins in an unbearable way.
We chose a table in the shade and ordered two lemon juices that the waiter brought us almost immediately. My goodness, that was nice!
- "Oh, isn’t this life?", I asked Edu who just laughed it off.
- "Yes, oh yeah, but soon it’ll be over!"
- "Oh, don’t remind me, we still have a few days to spend together".
Just then the waiter came with two more drinks that we hadn’t ordered. He started putting them down on the table, and Edu said:
- "Hey, we haven’t ordered this!"
- "Oh, I know, it’s from those two gentlemen from the table over there", said the waiter. We turned around and saw the guy in the velvet cap and the older guy who was with him waving at us. The guy in the cap (have I told you I thought he was gorgeous?) was gesturing in an exaggerated way. Along with the drinks was a little piece of paper that Edu proceeded to read:
For those lovely birds who jumped into strangers in the middle of a hotel.
J.W.L.
I looked at the guy once again to tell him thanks anyway when I noticed that he was gesturing at us to go over.
- "Edu, he’s telling us to go!"
- "I know, but I don’t think it’s correct. I’ve been always told not to talk to strangers"
- "Oh, yeah, like me, but even so, we can take care of ourselves, can’t we. We’re grown-ups now, aren’t we?"
Edu thought little bit and then said:
- "You’re absolutely right. Let’s go!"
