What is Egyptology?
Egyptolgy is the study of Ancient Egyptian life and culture.
Below is a list of terms that are
associated with Egyptology.
ADZE- tool to trim wood with, blade at a right angle to the blade/
ANKH- Egyptian sign associated with the word Life.
AMULET-  piece of jewelry used to ward off evil, a good luck charm.
ARCHEOLOGIST- a scientist who studies the past by artifacts left behind.
CANOPIC JARS-  four jars used in funeral services to perserve organs of the dead.
CARTOGRAPHER- person who makes maps.
CARTONNAGE- material used for manufacturing of sarchophagi, mummy masks, or canopic jars.
CARTOUCHE- carved inscription of a Pharaoh's name.
CATARACT- a waterfall.
CELESTIAL FIELDS- place where Ancient Egyptians thought people went after death; better than Earth.
DELTA- deposited soil at the mouth of a river.
DESHRET- an Egyptian word meaning red land, desert.
DYNASTY-list of rulers belonging to the same faily and time period.
EGYPTOLOGY- the study of ancient Egypt.
EMBALM- to perserve the body of the dead.
HAREM- serveral females associated with one male; includes wives and servants.
HIEROGLYPH- one of the symbols used in Ancient Egyptian writing.
KEMET- Egyptian word meaning black earth, the fertile soil in the Nile River Valley.
LOWER EGYPT- area north of thebes, including the Delta.
MUMMY- a preserved or embalmed body.
NATRON- a natural salt found in the dry lake beds of Egypt.
PAPYRUS- a reed that grows on the banks of the Nile River.
PECTORAL- someone who provides money or support to help someone else.
PHAROAH- ruler of Ancient Egypt. (Meant "great house")
PYLON- an Egyptian entrance gate.
PYRAMID- a geometrical figure having tree or four triangular sides meeting at a top point.
REAPING- cutting and harvesting corn.
REGALIA- emblems of  royalty worn by a king or a queen/
SARCOPHAGUS- a stone coffin.
SCARAB- dung beetle. (HARMLESS)
SCRIBE- compiler of written records.
SHRINE- container with doors in which image of god is kept.
SHROUD- cloth in which a body is kept in.
SPHINX- imaginary figure with the head of  man and a body of a lion.
TOMB- a structure for the burial of the dead.
UPPER EGYPT- area south of Thebes.
VALLEY OF KINGS- area west of Thebes where 18th and 9th dynasty kings are buried.
VIZIER- pharaoh's chief minister.
