Track Soldering Tips
CA Slot Car Message Board
"Gun" type soldering irons are barely good enough to use on very small wiring projects i.e. 'fixing the lose wire on my bicycle head light or putting grill marks on a micro waved steak...

A good 45w+ (80 is better) with a LARGE tip
Silver solder and a bottle of acid flux (Rosin core is for wires only)
Damp sponge to clean/tin the tip FREQUENTLY.

Make sure to "scotch brite" the rail first. "Tin" the rail and the wire as well. Use the flux during these processes. The key is to work quickly while concentrating high heat at just the joint.
