Location: Back end of the car.
Function: Holds crown gear, spacer, rear wheels and tires which support the car.
Brands: Pro Tech, BSRT and stock manufacturers.
Tips: Lots of racers use stock axles to race. However, most are not straight enough to give you a smooth ride and a fighting chance to win. Rear axles may be checked for straightness by setting up two razor blades parallel to each other and rolling the axle along them. If it rolls freely it is a keeper. If it comes to a stop toss it. Rear axles come in various thicknesses. You will want to choose a thickness that has slight movement when in the car, but fits tight enough so that it doesn't pop out every time you crash. An aftermarket axle that lots of racers use is a "splined" axle. This is one that is machined to be very straight, and has grooves for the wheels to be pressed onto for extra grip. You will want to lubricate the rear axle where it comes into contact with the chasis. |
