National History...
Sigma Alpha was created
through the association of five women at Ohio State University who
were interested in the social Greek system but also wanted a
organization that would provide them the opportunity to enhance
their chosen careers in agriculture. Ann Huling Mathews, Cindie
Davis, Jennifer McMillian, Amy Mathews, and Marilyn Burns became
the five founding sisters of Sigma Alpha. On January 26, 1978,
Sigma Alpha became an officially recognized student organization
at OSU. The first "rush" functions were held on February 28, 1978.
Out of this first rush 14 women were chosen as the first pledge
class of Sigma Alpha and received bids on April 12, 1978. Word of
the organization spread after the establishment of of the National
Board in 1980. In 1984, the Beta Chapter at Perdue University had
organized and been activated. Michigan State soon followed
becoming the Gamma Chapter. The third chapter to join, the Delta
Chapter at Iowa State, was added in 1986. In 1991, Sigma Alpha
joined the Professional Fraternity Association. Sigma Alpha
celebrated it's 20th Anniversary in 1998 and presently has 38
chapters across the United States.
