| 2 July 2002 Marty's A Local Hero By Mark Russell in Perth THE historic town of Toodyay, about 80km northeast of Perth, had a new sign on display yesterday, 'You are now in Marty country'. The sign, on a table in the front bar at Freemason's Hotel, summed up the feelings of locals despite the loss of local farmhand Nathan "Marty'' Martin, in the Big Brother finale last night. Simon Pearce, son of the hotel's owner, John, said Marty, 20, was big news in the town. He said Marty had put Toodyay, population 3800, on the map since appearing on the show. "I mean, 15 million people watching Big Brother know Marty's from Toodyay so it's got to be good for the town,'' Simon said. "He's a top bloke and no one has a bad word to say about him.'' The shire council is considering holding a civic reception to welcome him home. The Toodyay Lions footy team want him back after losing another game on the weekend without their star ruck rover who won last year's fairest and best award. The problem for them is Marty probably will not be back in Toodyay for quite some time because of an expected whirlwind of public engagements and appearances now the show has ended.
