IV
After Chakotay had shown Kathryn to 'her' quarters, he returned to the bridge. He thought about what she had told him and found that he actually believed her. Still, he had a feeling that something wasn't quite right about her.
His musings were interrupted when Seska stormed onto the bridge shortly after he had arrived there. She obviously wasn't in the best of moods but then, anything else would have surprised him.
"Chakotay, we need to talk... now!"
Chakotay was totally unimpressed by her outburst. Ever since he'd made the mistake of having an affair with her, Seska seemed thoroughly convinced that she had a right to order everyone around, including Chakotay himself.
"Actually, I'm quite busy right now, Seska, it'll have to wait."
He knew what it was she wanted to discuss. When B'Elanna had told him about Seska's reaction to their new passenger, he'd known that it was only a matter of time before she'd show up.
Chakotay hadn't even looked at her while saying these words. When he turned to her now to see her reaction, she threw him an angry glance. "Yes, Sir." She said sarcastically. Then she turned around and busied herself on the nearest console.
Chakotay sighed. He knew that eventually he'd have to face her and listen to her rantings about 'the other woman', followed by a thoroughly calculated attempt of seduction. He knew he'd never give in to her again.
In fact, there wasn't a day that went by without him regretting his decision to start an affair with her.
At least she left him alone for now, so he went on with his work. After having checked with all stations that everything was alright and that there were no other ships in the area, Chakotay was about to leave when Seska's head shot up.
"Chakotay, sensors are showing that someone is attempting to send an unauthorized transmission from this ship."
He was at her side immediately.
"Source?"
She checked and looked at him, an odd gleam in her eyes. "Your quarters...Sir."
Chakotay frowned. He hadn't expected Kathryn to betray him... them. After all, she claimed not to know anything about them. She couldn't know that they were enemies of the Federation. He had thought her to be grateful for being    rescued after such a long time.
He snapped out of his surprise when Seska said: "I'll send a security team down there and..."
"NO!" he said forcefully. Then, more softly: "I'll take care of the problem. Block the computer access in my quarters."
With that, he left the bridge and headed for his quarters, ignoring the odd looks he recieved from Seska and the bridge crew.
Chakotay stormed into his quarters without announcing his entry. He found Kathryn sitting in front of his computer and trying to hack into the system she'd just been blocked out of. When he entered, she shot out of the chair and retreated into the far corner of the room, surprise and fear written in her face and posture.
"What the hell do you think you're doing. I saved you, trusted you. I offered you safe passage on this ship but now I'm not so sure about it anymore.
Tell me who you're working for. Is it the Cardassians, the Federation? Come on, tell me. You'll save yourself a lot of trouble if you cooperate with me now."
She was visibly shaken. "You don't understand." She said with a pleading voice. "I'm not working for anyone...
And believe me, I am grateful because you rescued me..."
"Then why were you attempting to send messages off my ship without my knowledge. For all I know, you could have been attempting to contact the Cardassians and tell them where we are!"
"Believe me, that's the last thing I'd do! I wasn't trying to bring any harm to you or your ship. I'd never do that willingly!"
He looked at her, trying to read in her eyes whether she spoke the truth.
"I find that hard to believe", he said. "If you want to convince me, you'll have to be honest with me. And this time, I want to hear nothing but the truth. All about it.
If I find out that you're trying to deceive us again, I'll find a way to send you back to Cardassia Prime and you can    stay with Camet or whoever for the rest of your life- unless that was a lie, too, and you've never been a Cardassian prisoner in the first place."
"Everything I told you about my past is true."
He eyed her for another moment. She held his gaze, desperate to convince him of her words. After a moment, he nodded and gestured to the couch.
"Very well. Then why don't we sit down and you tell me the things you've left out before."
She hesitated for a second, then moved and sat down on the couch while Chakotay went to sit in an armchair on the other side of the low living room table.
"You must believe me that I'm very greatful about everything you've done for me. And I wasn't attempting to         deceive you. There's just something I must do and I'm afraid that you'll try to stop me. By now I think I have a pretty good idea about how you feel about Cardassians... my own feelings aren't much different but...
I won't expect you to help me, just leave me at the next inhabited planet and I'll go on from there."
Chakotay was getting mor impatient by the minute.
"So far you haven't really told me anything I want to know. Surely you don't think I'd let you go without knowing what you're up to. So either you tell me now what exactly it is that you 'must do', or I'll lock you up in the brig until you're willing to talk."
Kathryn seemed to ponder her options for a moment and then apparently came to a decision.
"I... There's someone who needs my help. She's still with the Cardassians and I can?' leave her with them. Please,       I'll do anything you want, just let me get her out of there!"
Her tone had became more pleading with each sentence, but Chakotay tried to harden himself against the protectiveness.he felt for her.
"And who exactly is this woman you're trying to help? Was she another prisoner?"
"Well... no... not exactly, she..."
"Then why do you want to get her out. If she isn't in any danger, then just leave her where she is."
"I can't, you don't understand..."
"Damn right, I don't understand!" Chakotay shouted. "I saved you from the Cardassians and treated you like a guest aboard my ship. I was willing to trust you and now I think it's time you did the same!"
Kathryn stared at him, tears in her eyes.
"If I tell you and you decide that you won't help me, will you allow me to leave your ship?"
Chakotay snorted.
"Well, I guess that depends on what you're trying to do. If it's anything that might endanger my ship or the Maquis    or..."
He saw the frown on her face.
"Maquis?"
Chakotay felt a very strong urge to hit himself. "That's... the organisation I work for."
He hoped that she wasn't going to ask any more questions about that subject and was relieved when she let it go.
"I assure you that I don't intend to endanger anyone. Anyone but myself, that is."
He looked at her for a moment and then nodded.
"Alright, I'll think about it." She was about to interrupt him so he held up his hand. "That's the best I can do. Right     now you should thank me that I even consider believing anything of what you're going to tell me."
Kathryn gave a resigned nod.
"I suppose you're right."
"Good, now, I'm dying to hear your story."
Kathryn looked up at him and saw a faint smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. For a moment, she even thought she detected a twinkle in his eyes.
She returned the smile and, for the first time in years, felt that, just maybe, she had finally found someone who would help her make everything alright.
