"Sunset Boulevard "is one of Hollywood's strongest indictments against his own excesses. It justly deserves its place among the best films ever made.
The film received 11 Academy Award nominations:
Best Picture, Best Director, Best Film editing,
Best B&W cinematography,  Best Actor:William Holden, Best actress: Gloria Swanson, Best supporting actor: Erich von Stroheim, Best supporting actress: Nancy Olson, Best Screenplay, Best Musical score, Best Set decoration B&W.  It won in the three last categories.
Gloria Swanson, amazingly lost to another of 1950 Holden's costars, Judy Hollyday.
Holden deservedly got his first Oscar nomination for the complex role of Joe Gillis, the disillusioned, cynical screenwriter down on his luck who is introduced by  chance in the sumptuous, decadent, absurd world of  the wealthy aging  has-been star Norma Desmond, whose ex husband is now her butler, ready to do anything to please her.
Holden conveys perfectly the transition of Joe from the disenchanted outsider who sees a way to make a buck agreeing to ghostwrite the script Norma has prepared for her  comeback ( that  is real only in her mind) to the willing  lover of the older woman and  kept  companion   in the luxury of her villa on the Sunset Boulevard.......
