In the 1950 Best Actors nominees category, Holden was competing with two past oscar winners, both in a  comedy, Spencer Tracy in "The father of the bride" and James Stewart in "Harvey" and with two other first time nominees, Louis Calhern for  " The magnificent yankee" (one of his rare leading roles) and Jose Ferrer for"Cyrano De Bergerac".
