A Mark Richards' Virtual Photo Album

(Jaunary 5, 1999) -- Last year, goaltender Mark Richards saw playing time in both the American Hockey League and the International Hockey League. But when he received the call this year from the Portland Pirates of the AHL, he declined.

Portland Head Coach Mark Kumpel called Richards and Pride Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations Jack Capuano, Jr. on Monday night to discuss bringing Richards up to the Pirates. Earlier in the season, Portland called up Richards, but he did not report due to an injury.

"Kumpel called about six or seven last night," Capuano said. "Mark didn't think the situation was right at this particular time. He showed loyalty to myself, to the Pee Dee Pride and to the fans by not going."

Capuano said if Richards had moved up to Portland he could have been gone seven to 10 days or longer.

The Pride (were) playing (at the time of the call up) without leading scorer Dany Bousquet, who was called up by the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the AHL on Dec. 29 (1998), and captain Brian Goudie, who is suspended indefinitely pending review of a match penalty call he received during the Dec. 31 (1998) game at South Carolina.
