The evening celebration is usually started by the lighting of the bale fires. This is done to burn away any residual energies of winter and to purify the land, the people and the animals. The May day festival is symbolized by the phallic symbol of the May Pole. In the days of old, the broomstick played an important role at Beltane. People would go into the fields with their brooms, bessom end up, and leap high into the air (Witches flying on their brooms), to show how high their crops would grow. All over the world this time of year is a fertility celebration, whether your planting crops or favors to life. And the wheel turns again. |
