10/15/04  Hi Amanda- My Mother, ETHEL WILSON HARRIS, was born in Sabinal in 1893. Her Father was a telegraph operator for the railroad. While working there he was asked to get some aeromotor windmills in, to go with this lumber he had brought over from East Texas. Mr John T. Wilson was the telegraph operator for several years, but his selling of windmills grew so much, he was asked to move to San Antonio, where he opend a store on Main Plaza. His business was so successful that he opended a HUGE wholesale company on Ruiz Street. The rest is history, in that he began building homes. He opened a subdivision in NE San Antonio and it got so big the main street was named WILSON. His daughter Ethel was my mother. Her fame for her tile and pottery business has been written up in the October 2004 "Texas Highways" magazine. Page 62 has a story about her. (Click to read article)
I have recently bought some land there next to the Sabinal River and I am now making it my home.
Sincerely Yours,
Don Wilson Harris.

One of our fighting men in the NAVY  needs Sabinal's help to remember the past! Will you be the one to find this missing part of history?

4/1/02 Hi Amanda- My name is Nathen Taylor. My Father (Ralph Taylor) grew up in Sabinal, and my Grandfather (Harvey Taylor) and my Grandmother lived there most of the life. They owned the two story house on May street until they passed away and the family had to sell it. I have a question for you. My Grandfather bought a 1969 Chevy long bed step side from the old Sabinal Lumber company and now I have it. I am trying to restore it and would LOVE to put the logo back on the side of the door. But I don't have a copy of what it looks like. Is there a copy that you could fax or email me? I don't know if it is possible, but I would be really grateful! I am in the Navy station in San Diego California and I would love to see people's faces when I drive this pretty truck around town with"Sabinal Lumber, Sabinal Texas" painted on the doors. I spent alot of my summers in Sabinal with my Grandparents and I really miss the town. Thanks for the website, it was really neat to see the town again!.     Nathen Taylor

5/25/02 Hi Amanda- Until I was 12, my stepfather, Fred Rose, was the railroad section foreman in Sabinal. We lived in the RR Section house near the RR bridge. What a wonderful playground. Along with my brother George, step brothers Jame, Conrad and Allen Rose, we made many tracks along the river for a mile or so in each direction. I started to school there in 1930, my teacher was Miss Ellen Bell. She taught there for many years. I remember lots of people from those days, most are gone now I'm sure. Jim Joplin Email
5/23/02 Hi Amanda- Love your website! I enjoyed my visit to Sabinal 2 years ago. My wife and I are coming back to visit the In-laws, Rudy and Lupe Valdez. My wife is Sylvia (Valdez), sister to Sheriff Rick of Uvalde County. I am sure you see him around! What is up Rick!! Being a lifetime resident of a bustling California town, I can appreciate the serene setting and small-town charm of Sabinal. Say "Hi" to everyone for me! See you in July!

3/15/02 Hi Amanda- I lived in Sabinal for awhile in the 1950's. All I can remember about it was we lived in an apartment there next to a field where someone rasied goats. What an Aroma! LOL!! The couple that lived next door were the Carson's. They had a small daughter who's name was Polly. I have a friend ther whose parents managed a Rest Home. I can't recall his name. You do nice work on your site. I'll see what picture I can come up with & send it to you.
