Onerous Jobs - boring, mucky and tedious, but has to be done...
The car was in a very good state of repair when I bought it.  There had clearly been some welding and plating done, but no more than one would expect on a car of a certain age.

Visit the excellent Saab-v4 site for a summary of things to look for when buying your Saab 96.

After removing all seats and carpets (a very easy job - do not be deterred!) the only - but substantial -work needed was rust treatment and plating on the rear wheel arches, behind the back seats.  Remember to treat the mating side of the sheet metal if you are plating (or ask for it to be done) as well as the exposed side as trapped moisture will rear its ugly head again as rust.  It wont be seen until it is too late.

My first job is to meticulously go through the underneath of the car, looking for rust and areas of underseal that will need treating.

An easy enough job which only requires axle stands.  As am going to be working on the suspension and brakes later on, have taken off the wheels and suspesnion assemblies (you can probably stop at the wheels though!).  Just make sure you protect the brakes, joints and any rubber components with plastic bag and tape.

I used
Waxoyl, a flexible rust destroyer and waterproofing agent available in black and clear.  It is available as a spray which can reguvenate dried and cracked underseal.  Waxoyl also make underseal and Stonechip.

Supertrol is a clear waterproofing agent that is more fluid than Waxoyl and so should be used first to get into the nooks and crannies.

I am currently removing the steering and suspention assemblies
here, in preparation for further jobs but also to facilitate giving my bottom a good hard scrub.

Pop back later to see how it goes
