| Oil System Oil is fundamentaly important to the engine. It lubricates, it cleans and it cools. The more oil and the higher the pressure the better. Uprated Oil Spring I have tacken the sump off to fit the steel timing gears. This has also given me an opportunity to upgrade the fuel pump. While your sump is off, give it a really good scrub inside and out. Get all the nasties out before they get sucked up into your engine. Yuck... Ford Taunus V6 pumps are quite easily available and benefit over the V4 by having a higher rated Pressure Relief Valve spring. This allows the oil to flow at a higher preassure, meaning more oil is moving faster around the engine, providing lubrication and taking away heat and grime. A cheaper, but messier way of improving your oil system is simply to replace your standard V4 pressure reileif spring with a high pressure V6 spring. To remove your spring you will need to remove the valve cover by means of leavering it off with a self tapping screw. You will, therefore, need a new valve cover as well; ask for a Taunus pressure relief valve cover and you may get baffled looks. Ask for a bog standard 17mm core plug and you may get more luck. Cost of a new pump, �50-�100. Cost of a new spring and core plug, less than �2. You can just about see the difference between the two in that the V6 is slighly longer, of a larger guage wire and with a wider wind to it. Larger Oil Filter I have no idea if my theory is right but I am sticking to it: I have fitted a much larger oil filter, the reasons are many fold: 1) Being larger, it will increase the capicity of oil in the system. OK, only marginally but as oil is a coolant as well, the more the merrier. 2) The holes in and out of the Oil Filters are the same, there is, therefore the same amount of oil passing through the larger filter as the smaller one, but being larger, the same quanity of oil has a larger surface area of membrane to pass through, meaning it will pass through the filter at a lower pressure (pressure = force / area) and therefore, the larger oil filter will offer less resistance to the oil system. This is good on two counts: 2a) If the oil is passing through the filter at a lower pressure, it is less likely to push nasties through the filter which should be caught, at a lower pressure. 2b) If it is passing through at a lower pressure, the filter is offering less resistance in the system and therefore, less strain on the pump. Increasinging oil pressure with a stronger spring counteracts the last two points but neverthelss,all the more reason to use a larger filter if using a higher pressure spring. Thats what I think anyway. |
