Key Points/Handout |

The idea of multiculturalism was first expressed in the mid 1960's, when the "Royal British Commission Of Bilingualism & Biculturalism"was formed. This basically adressed the french-speaking people and the english-speaking people. In 1971 Canada became the first country in the world to adopt a multicultural policy(Pierre Trudeau's Policy), respecting and valuing everyones nationalities. This later became a low in 1982. |

Canada is multicultural today due to all the immigrants. Since Canada first came to be immigrants have settled on our lands. This all started by the natives, later the Europeans came over here and settled here as well. They survived by trading with the natives. In the years to follow Canada recieved immigrants from all over the world especially Asia. Immigrants came due to famines, wars and racism in other countries. |

The federal government is all for multculturalism, although the multicultural policy wsa passed only in 1971 Canada has been accepting immigrants since the 1600's and now accepts over 200,000 immigrants a year. The federal government treats all Canadian citizens the same way and unlike the US canadians are allowed to keep their nationalities, making it so that Canada is a "mosaic" country |

The benefits of multiculturalism are endless. They provide a rich cultural society, where people can adopt others traditions and have a chance to learn. Since thier are so many other races there is not much racism, since everyone grows up together they learn to respect each other. Canada gets a widened art pallet and without immigrants and multiculturalism Canada wouldnt have survived, or been as developed. |

The drawbacks of a multicultural society include a chance that prejudice may exist, some races beleive they are better than others. Also some immigrants come form other places and tend to speak different languages and have differnt laws causing problems in understanding. Other then that only benifets exist. |
