Nigeria...
It was of course less demanding, for a 5 yr old
London boy
like me to adjust to the new environment as it would be for my
much older brothers. My sister was only a few months old. I must
say, I had the best years of my life so far in Ibadan. I remember
how we use to feel that 'Eko' is white moin-moin, just to taste
it and spit it out later. Also, how we use to say and still say
'Bra' instead of 'Brother' as a prefix to names of older people.
How you use to wet urself in the classroom because you can't
tell the teacher in the local language, you need a wee!, or we
go around repetitively prostrating for any new person we meet,
or the endless search for an 'arodan' that can never be found
- the list goes on, and on ...
I must admit that as London boys, just arrived in the motherland,
we appeared thick!!!
